The main functions of the Central Meteorological Observatory

The Central Meteorological Observatory (National Meteorological Center) is a scientific and technological basic social public welfare institution. Its main responsibilities are:

1. Lead the organization of weather business, ecological and agricultural meteorological business systems Design, organization and implementation of business scientific research projects, and formulation of business specifications and standards.

2. Responsible for weather monitoring and forecasting nationwide and in major regions of the world, and responsible for disastrous weather warnings in my country and its responsible sea areas.

3. Undertake professional meteorological forecasting services such as oceans, national transportation, hydrology and geological disasters, environment and health, and energy in major regions across the country and the world.

4. Undertake the monitoring, prediction, early warning and assessment of ecological and agricultural meteorology and related disasters across the country and major regions in the world, and provide meteorological guarantee for national food security and ecological construction and protection.

5. Undertake public meteorological service tasks of weather, ecology and agricultural meteorology, release public meteorological service information to the central (national) media, and provide comprehensive services to the Party Central Committee, the State Council and relevant departments Decision-making meteorological services.

6. Responsible for monitoring meteorological disasters, collecting and evaluating meteorological and derivative disasters, and undertaking emergency support service tasks for major meteorological disasters.

7. Relying on basic meteorological services, develop meteorological science and technology services for various professional users.

8. Responsible for the development, improvement, upgrade, operation and maintenance of numerical forecast business systems, the inspection and evaluation of models, and the interpretation and application of numerical forecast products.

9. Undertake the task of providing relevant business and technical guidance to subordinate meteorological stations.

10. Rely on scientific and technological innovation to carry out applied research and technology development in the fields of numerical forecasting, weather, ecology and agricultural meteorology.

11. Undertake the tasks of the WMO Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) and the Environmental Emergency Response Center (EERC); undertake the tasks of the THORPEX Asian TIGGE Center.

12. Responsible for the administrative management and party affairs of the unit such as personnel, finance, and materials.

13. Be entrusted with the accounting and other tasks of the National Climate Center and the National Meteorological Information Center.

14. Complete other tasks assigned by the China Meteorological Administration.
