What is jacking construction?

The jacking construction method refers to the construction method of pouring or assembling the beam segments on the embankment behind the abutment one by one, and pushing them longitudinally with the jacking device, so that the beam segments can be put in place through the temporary sliding device at the top of each pier.

Jacking construction does not affect the traffic under the bridge, does not need large lifting equipment, and has no aerial work. It is especially suitable for the construction of long-span bridges, long-line approach bridges or urban bridge interchanges.

Extended data

The working principle of jacking construction method can be described by three main links of periodic operation.

That is to say, concrete beam segments are poured or assembled in a fixed site behind the abutment, and permanent and temporary prestressed steel bars are tensioned, and the beam body is pushed section by section by means of a pushing device arranged at the bottom of the beam on the abutment or bracket near the precast site of the beam segment and a sliding device arranged on each pier support or temporary pier.

Because the beam section is periodically constructed on a fixed site, the construction quality and progress are easy to ensure. However, the jacking construction method also has some shortcomings, which restrict the geometric shape of the bridge structure. For the beam section with variable cross section, curved beam axis and the bridge with variable slope, the jacking construction cannot be adopted.
