Do you think Huang Kan is a true master of Chinese studies?
Huang Kan (1886.04.03-1935.438+00.08) is a famous linguist. First named Qiao Nai, later renamed Qiao Xin, and finally changed to Kan, with the word Ji Gang and the word Ji Zi. In his later years, he was a layman and was born in Qichun County, Hubei Province.
Crazy, aloof, crazy, famous, good at traveling, reading, cursing, unruly, informal, eccentric, maverick ... Huang Kan left a series of keywords and anecdotes to future generations. Huang Kan1886 was born in Chengdu on April 3rd. First named Qiao Nai, later renamed Qiao Xin, and finally changed to Kan, with the word Ji Gang and the word Ji Zi. In his later years, he was a layman and was born in Qichun County, Hubei Province. 65438-0905, studied in Japan, studied under Zhang Taiyan in Tokyo, accepted primary school and Confucian classics, and was a big disciple of the Zhang family. He was a professor in Peking University, Central University, Jinling University and Shanxi University. They called him, Zhang Taiyan and Wei Liu "masters of Chinese studies".
Gu Hongming is the first weirdo in Peking University, and Huang Kan is the second weirdo. How eccentric is he? There are several things that can be explained. When he was a professor at Nanjing Central University, he had a nickname "Professors can't come without three", that is, "It doesn't rain, it doesn't snow and it doesn't wind." Speaking of it, there are not many professors who are so awesome in history, but there are not many masters like him in history. Because of Huang Kan's profound attainments in Confucian classics, literature and philosophy, he is called "the master of primary school since Ganjia" and "the bridge between the past and the future of traditional philology". Now, it seems that you really have as much pride as you have talent, which is absolutely true.
Don't think it's over just because the weather is bad. But this is really just the beginning. Every time Huang Kan talks about an important place in class, he always stops and says to the students, "Sorry, there is a big secret behind this ancient book. This salary is far from it. Who wants to know, I have to eat out. " The students can only be dumbfounded and invite him to dinner.
Huang Kan is not only hard on his students, but also always turns his nose up at his colleagues. Even Hu Shi, who was in the limelight at that time, was cynical as soon as he seized the opportunity. On one occasion, Hu Shi promoted vernacular Chinese at a meeting, and Huang Kan was embarrassed: "You keep saying that you want to promote vernacular Chinese, but I don't think it's true." Hu Shi was puzzled and asked him why he said so. I saw Huang Kan joking unhurriedly: "If you practice, your name should not be Hu Shi, but' Where are you going?'" "The words sound just fell and cheers rang out from the audience, making Hu Shi unable to step down at the moment, which was very embarrassing.
Later in class, Huang Kan mentioned Hu Shi and his vernacular Chinese, saying that classical Chinese is superior to vernacular Chinese. He gave an example: "If Hu Shi's wife dies, his family will send a telegram to inform Hu himself. If he used classical Chinese, his wife would return to China immediately. " If you use the vernacular, you must write' Your wife is dead, come back soon' 1 1. The telegram fee is twice as expensive as that in classical Chinese. "The students burst into laughter. When this matter reached Hu Shi's ears, Hu Shi lost face, but he could only submit to humiliation.
There is another big place in Huang Kan that has been criticized as lewd. In the publication of that year, there was an article "Huang Kan's articles are all over the world, very lewd, not my mother, not my daughter, not my wife." It means that as long as it is not Huang Kan's wife and daughter, he can accept it. Almost to the point of being a wife. It is said that he was married nine times in his life. One student even betrayed her marriage. Unable to shake off the huge shadow cast by Huang Kan, she went crazy and finally hanged herself. At that time, people called him "the devil wears Prada shamelessly" and denounced him as "uneducated and uneducated".
However, no matter how careless Huang Kan is, he is still a purely filial person. When his mother died, he vomited several liters of blood and was very hurt. Later, forced by his livelihood, he also took his mother's coffin with him when he gave lectures everywhere, which was once said to be a beautiful talk. Even because he missed his mother so much, Huang Kan specially asked his old friend Sue to draw a picture of "Dream of Mother's Grave", wrote a painful eulogy, and asked Zhang Taiyan to write an postscript. This painting became his private treasure until his death, and whenever his mother and loving mother were born and died, Huang Kan would lead his family to sacrifice and mourn. In fact, Huang Kan's arrogance is not the whole picture, but his piety and respect for academics is the root of his temperament.
Huang Kan's scholarship is very rigorous, and he is very cautious and serious about his writings. Books on classics, history and languages have been read for dozens of times, and they are familiar enough to quote specific articles, page numbers and lines at will, with almost no mistakes. It can be seen from a small incident that when he was studying Chinese studies at home, he didn't go out or eat. He only prepared steamed bread dishes and read books while eating. He was fascinated by it, and he actually used Chinese ink as a side dish. He chewed it for a long time and didn't find it. A friend came to see him and laughed at him. He still doesn't know what to laugh at.
Although Huang Kan is unruly and informal, he dare not disrespect reading. Huang Kan is very meticulous in reading, and always finishes what he started. When people give up reading halfway, they will show displeasure and accuse each other of "killing the book". Best of all, at the end of his life, he still had a sequel to Tang Cuiwen that he didn't finish reading. He vomited blood and sighed, "I have cursed and killed the head of the book all my life. I don't want to be scolded."
Huang Kan often teaches students: "The study of China is like casting copper on a mountain and boiling salt in the sea, which is endless." It is intended to teach students that as scholars, they should make progress day by day and must not be complacent and complacent. So Huang Kan has a classic saying: "Don't write a book before the age of 50." He believes that learning should not deceive others, but should be responsible for future generations, so when there is no corresponding academic accumulation, never write a book to confuse the world.
Unfortunately, Huang Kan died before he was 50 years old because of excessive drinking, and the blood vessels in his stomach ruptured. Although he has not published any works, he is still recognized as a master of Chinese studies at home and abroad. Crazy, aloof, crazy, famous, good at traveling, reading, cursing, unruly, informal, eccentric, maverick ... Huang Kan left a series of keywords and anecdotes to future generations.
We can't help but think of Ruan Ji, one of the "Seven Sages of Bamboo Forest" in Wei and Jin Dynasties. He set a lofty example for the century-old literati, which is not kitsch, not flattering, not expensive, not vulgar, right and wrong, love and hate.
