Precautions for preventing cat heatstroke

First, provide a good environment for cats.

1. Blow the air conditioner. If there is air conditioning indoors, putting the cat indoors can keep it cool.

If it is too cold, please make sure that your cat can enter the room with the right temperature. Sometimes air conditioners and fans may make things too cold, which may be a little irritating for a cat. )

2. Use a fan to improve the air circulation at home. If you don't have air conditioning, fans and windows are another good choice to cool your home and your cat. Put the fan in front of the open window, move the air into the house and let it cool. Make sure that the fan you use is safe for your pet by checking whether the cover of the rotating fan blade is secure.

Place one or more fans on the floor in the corner of the room, facing the center of the room. In this way, the cat can lie at a comfortable distance and let her air flow on her fur. This air movement helps to cool the cat in a way similar to sweating.

3. Always provide fresh drinking water. Cats need to stay hydrated all the time. In addition, when the cat's blood temperature rises, sensors in the brain will tell it to drink water to cool and dilute the blood. So make sure that cats can always get clean water.

4. Let the cat choose a cool place. Cats are smart at all times, including in hot weather. Cats like to curl up in the bathtub or sink, because the tiles will stay cool even if it is hot outside. Because they are usually cooler, cats sometimes prefer tile areas of houses, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and kitchens. If your cat chooses a place and looks comfortable, let it stay there.

Second, help the cat cool down.

1. Try to keep cats less active in hot weather. Now is not the time to play energy games with cats. Chasing the light of a laser pointer or some other toy to tease the cat. Instead, encourage cats to rest and relax.

2. Cool the cat with a wet towel. Most cats don't like getting wet, but you can use a wet towel to help them cool down. Just wet the towel with cold water, and then gently touch your cat's back with the towel from the top of your head.

Brush the cat with a brush every day. Fluffy fur is often sultry, and letting air flow through it helps to keep cats cool. This is especially important for long-haired cat breeds.

First thing in the morning, enter the procedure of grooming and brushing the cat. If she feels uncomfortable because of the heat, she will be more willing to cooperate.

Avoid shaving the cat's hair too open, because it will expose the cat's skin to the sun, leading to the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Although it seems strange to wear a thick fur coat in hot weather, experts now believe that hair has the function of heat insulation and cold protection in summer and winter. So shaving the fur may not help the kitten stay cool. But if the coat is seriously wrinkled or tangled, it will form a shell on the cat. This kind of shell means that the coat doesn't work, and it is the best way to let professionals scrape it off.

Third, identification and processing.

1. Watch out for signs of heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting and rapid breathing, drowsiness, bright pink ears, confusion, weakness and inability to stand, trembling, tremor and even convulsions.

Cats suffering from heatstroke will also feel very hot on the mat. If you suspect that your cat has heatstroke, please immediately put your cat on a cool surface, such as a tile floor. Then turn on the fan and put it where it can blow on her, so that some heat can be taken away.

2. Cool the cat with a cold wet towel, and then add water. If your cat seems to have heatstroke, please put a cool wet towel on its paw and give it water immediately. If she is too weak to drink water, please try to wet her gums with a wet cloth.

Avoid ice water or very cold water, because the temperature difference between extreme high temperature and extreme cold will make cats too upset.

3. Call the vet for advice. Your cat may need to be taken to the vet to treat heatstroke. Veterinarians can provide intravenous infusion to lower the core temperature of cats and maintain blood supply to organs.
