Tokyo belongs to a corner of Kanto, located at the southern end of Kanto Plain, facing Tokyo Bay, and roughly located in the center of the Japanese archipelago. In the formal definition of administrative divisions, Tokyo is limited to Tokyo, which is a first-class administrative region of Japan with prefectures. Its jurisdiction includes outlying islands such as Tokyo, Tama Prefecture, Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Among them, the Tokyo metropolitan area is the seat of the Japanese central government.
