The method of raising turtles in winter is correct.

hibernation

Generally speaking, the Brazilian tortoise began to hibernate below 15℃ and began to feed when the water temperature rose above 16℃. The cold resistance of Brazilian tortoise is ok, as long as the water temperature is not lower than 4℃, it can safely overwinter. Family breeding is generally not lower than this temperature indoors, but if it is raised on the balcony or garden pool, you should pay attention. Especially when the temperature is low at night, we must take good cold protection measures. It's best to move them indoors and put them in clean plastic pots. There is no need to drain the water in the basin. Cover the turtle with wet grass or wet towel. Usually pay attention to spray some water to keep humidity, and it will be safe in winter.

If you want to breed red-eared turtle successfully, the first step is to let him hibernate safely. First of all, you must make correct preparations. First of all, the digestive tract of the red-eared turtle must be emptied, because the food left in the body will ferment, which will rupture the stomach wall and intestinal wall and lead to death.

The following methods can effectively empty food for red-eared turtles. First, stop feeding at least one week (preferably two weeks) before the temperature drops, and soak him in warm water for the last three to four days to help him clean up his feces. It should be noted that if the tortoise is malnourished, haggard, weak and emaciated, don't let it hibernate. Usually, such a turtle will not store the necessary fat to maintain this period of inactivity. When the "fuel" is exhausted, it will die unfortunately. Therefore, breeders should try their best to ensure that their turtles are healthy and eat enough nutrition during the vigorous and active period. Similarly, the newborn turtle should not be allowed to hibernate in the first winter, but should be kept warm and fed constantly. Young turtles are usually too fragile to survive even in a properly controlled environment. It is said that the mortality rate of newborn turtles in the first year is as high as 85%. Because he has no reproductive ability before he is two years old, it is best to keep him warm, continue feeding and keep him active for two years until he has strong physical strength to cope with the cold during hibernation. After doing the above, the second step is to provide a place to hibernate. You can choose one of the following ways. The first method may be close to the natural environment, but it is difficult for breeders to provide it. It is necessary to fill a large container with water, and then put it into the mud bottom of about 6 to 8 inches (about 15-20 cm). The most ideal container used by the author is a plastic manger, because it can hibernate several turtles at the same time (a container with a capacity of 50 gallons seems to be the best) (a container with a capacity of about 190 liters). Maybe you can use several plastic boxes of clothes, which are more suitable for smaller ones. The reason for using mud is obvious. Red-eared turtles will hide themselves like in the wild, but this way is dirty and may bring trouble to the breeder, but it can give the turtle a feeling of home, especially if your turtle is wild.

First of all, if you look at the size of your turtle,

On the edge of his back shell, there are round shell marks. One mark is one year old, like a tree wheel.

If it's a turtle under 3 years old, I suggest you don't hibernate, or he may not wake up. Turtles over 3 years old had better start hibernating. You can keep it from hibernating by adjusting the water temperature above 26 degrees. But in winter, you should keep warm. If a turtle before the age of 3 hibernates, he will wake up easily. Do a lot of preparation before hibernation. Please note the following points:

1. Generally, turtles born in that year are best kept in warm air, because the risk of hibernation is too great; You can make the water deeper and change it once a day.

2. Turtles will stop eating when the water temperature reaches 17 degrees, which varies from person to person.

Autumn is the season for turtles to accumulate physical strength for winter, so you can feed more and better.

The first method may be close to the natural environment, but it is difficult for breeders to provide it. It is necessary to fill a large container with water and then put it into a mud bottom of about 6 to 8 inches (ws note: about 15-20 cm). The most ideal container used by the author is a plastic manger, because several turtles can hibernate at the same time (a container with a volume of 50 gallons seems to be the best) (ws note: a container with a volume of about 190 liters). Maybe you can use some plastic clothes.

The reason for using mud is obvious. Red-eared turtles will hide themselves like in the wild, but this way is dirty and may bring trouble to the breeder, but it can give the turtle a feeling of home, especially if your turtle is wild.

What precautions should be taken when hibernating!

The second method, which means a little terrestrial, is to hibernate several turtles in a large container at the same time, or to put a thin layer of potting mud (about 1 inch) for each turtle or pair of turtles in a small container, then put the turtles in the container, and finally mix them with loosely mixed hay and water moss, and perhaps add some potting mud. This is a simulation of some turtles hibernating on land. Although this method is usually designed for box turtles (that is, box turtles or closed turtles) and tortoises, it is also suitable for some ze turtles. This method is more convenient for ordinary breeders and allows them to closely monitor turtles during hibernation.

When you settle your turtle, you must give it the right temperature. If it is too low, it will freeze him to death. If it is too high, it will make him hibernate in and out, turn on and off his metabolism, and accelerate the consumption of body fat, so that the turtle really can't sleep. In addition, the temperature that makes them hibernate should not suddenly drop, but gradually drop in two or three days. Usually, turtles of the genus Tortoise move around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (ws note: about 26-27 degrees Celsius), and the suitable hibernation temperature is about 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit (ws note: about 10- 13 degrees Celsius). This temperature seems to be suitable for the southernmost species, but it is even more dangerous below this temperature. The reason why the temperature can't drop too fast is that even the most bitter-tolerant tortoise is likely to die because it can't stand such drastic changes.

Just as you won't put your turtle into hibernation because of the sudden drop in temperature, you shouldn't take them out too quickly, don't take them out directly from the container, but warm the room first. If you can't warm the room, you can take the whole container out of the room and put it in another suitable room (note that such a large container filled with water is extremely heavy).

Let the temperature rise in a day or two, then take the turtles out by hand and let them return to their original residence. Usually, it takes them a day or two to readjust, so don't try to feed them before the fourth or fifth day. When they really start eating, make sure you give them more than they used to eat, so that they can recover to their best health and weight as soon as possible and the breeding process can go smoothly. "

6 winter

Before hibernating, you should give the tortoise some fat. Starting from September, soft-shelled turtles should be fed twice a day for a month to store enough wintering fat. In June of 5438+00, when the turtle stopped eating, it was soaked in warm water to stimulate the turtle to defecate, clean the intestines and excrete the residual feces in the body. In order to avoid intestinal diseases caused by staying in the intestine for a long time, turtles will live on these fats for half a year after stopping eating. If the turtle is too thin or the feeding conditions are not good, or too small, it will be raised for the winter by heating, and the temperature will be adjusted to 28 degrees. If they don't hibernate in this state, they are likely to die because they can't persist in the temperature increase.

The real hibernating method is to spread thick wet sand in the container and cover it with newspaper balls. The tortoise will sleep in the sand by itself and replenish water once a week to keep the sand and newspapers moist. Hibernation is a test for raising turtles at home. First of all, you should make sure that your baby is healthy and free from diseases. Tortoise with poor constitution must not hibernate. Little turtle suggests not to hibernate, winter is very sad! You can prepare some sand for the hibernating turtle, but if it can't climb in, don't bury it by force. Soft-shelled turtles that don't hibernate in the sand can be placed in shallow water and covered with a layer of wet cotton yarn to keep them moist, which also has a certain heat preservation effect. Turtles who hibernate in the sand should make sure that the sand is clean and pollution-free. Keep the sand moist during the hibernation of turtles. The tortoise may wake up during hibernation, so make sure it doesn't climb where you can't find it after waking up. In addition, turtles who wake up from hibernation must not be fed.

When the temperature drops below 13℃, it begins to hibernate. Throughout the wintering period, the head, tail and limbs retract into the shell, close your eyes, and do not eat, move or excrete until they emerge from the sting. If the environment does not adapt, it is difficult to enter a dormant state. The hibernation temperature of turtles is 1- 10℃. Above 10℃, it is easy to wake the turtle, which will consume physical strength and lead to the decline of the turtle's physique, which is not conducive to the growth and reproduction in the coming year. Repeated hibernation and awakening during hibernation can also lead to the death of turtles. Temperatures below 0℃ will frostbite turtles and even freeze to death. Therefore, the possible temperature changes must be considered when setting the hibernation place for turtles artificially.

Can turtles be taken out to bask in the sun when they hibernate?

No need. Always observe when hibernating, and carefully observe the turtle in your hand. If eyes and nose are found to be red and swollen, it is necessary to end hibernation in time and keep the environmental humidity of hibernating turtles. There is no point in sunbathing. It is normal for hibernating species to stay out of the sun for several months.

It is normal for turtles not to bask in the sun during hibernation. Letting them bask in the sun actually disturbs their hibernation and makes them consume unnecessary physical strength. If they want to get some sunshine, they should let it get more sunshine in summer.

There are many turtles. Every winter, they start eating and drinking and sleep all day.

In fact, turtles in this period should also be well raised:

If you think your turtle has eaten enough in summer and enough fat in winter, let it hibernate naturally. Just keep the temperature around 10 degrees. Prepare a container for him for the winter, big or small. Sand and pebbles can be put in it, but they must be disinfected before use! There are many disinfection methods, the simplest one is boiling in boiling water for 15 minutes. After the sand is put away, inject some water to increase the humidity.

When the tortoise stops eating in late autumn, it should hibernate. Pay attention to let him hibernate as soon as possible, otherwise it will continue to consume its stored fat and even endanger life.

Before putting the soft-shelled turtle into the hibernation box, soak it in warm water of 25 degrees for 30 minutes to make it defecate. This is very important. Otherwise, the residue in the intestine will be sucked away by the small intestine in the long winter. When the turtle wakes up next year, it is very likely that the intestines are blocked and the stool cannot be pulled out. At this time, if the turtle is smaller 100%, there is no cure!

When everything is ready, put the turtle's hibernation box in a quiet and dark place, and it will be all right. Don't disturb it unless there are special circumstances, but check the water content of the turtle box regularly. If it is less, it is necessary to supplement it and keep the humidity.

When it is warm in bloom next spring, the tortoise will naturally wake up!

Don't feed it immediately after waking up. It's best to rest for a few days and then feed it some fresh bait or turtle feed after the temperature stabilizes!

The above are the general precautions for raising turtles in winter, and these are basically enough. However, it's best not to let the turtle that is too young hibernate, because its young body can't survive the winter! So it is necessary to raise it when it is hot. Heating feeding is mainly to pay attention to changing water, and the temperature of new water should be consistent with that of old water in the cylinder. And pay attention to the temperature fluctuation in the cylinder day and night, otherwise you may catch a cold!

Usually, turtles of the genus Tortoise move around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (about 26-27 degrees Celsius), and a suitable hibernation temperature is about 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit (about 10- 13 degrees Celsius), which seems to be the suitable temperature for the southernmost species. There are several ways to provide a suitable hibernation temperature, but if you live in tropical or subtropical areas, it may cost you. If the breeder lives in a mild climate like the author, it is easy to provide suitable hibernation temperature, and the winter temperature is the suitable hibernation temperature. Put your red-eared turtle in a room that is not easily affected by the heat in the house. Cellars and attics are ideal places. If the room you choose is not cold enough, you can open the window a little. If you are worried that the room will be too cold, you can use a small heater with a built-in thermostat. The author used to do this, and suggested it.

However, if the room temperature in your area doesn't drop to a temperature suitable for hibernation, it may be a bit expensive, and you may want to consider using those refrigeration equipment (the kind used by restaurants to refrigerate champagne is the best). The advantage of using this device is that you can create a suitable hibernation environment for your turtle at any time.

Things to consider after hibernation:

Just as you won't put your turtle into hibernation because of the sudden drop in temperature, you shouldn't take them out too quickly or directly from the container, but you should warm the room first. When they really start eating, make sure you give them more than they used to eat to make up for what they lost in winter. The purpose is to restore their best health and weight as soon as possible, so that the breeding process can proceed smoothly. Unhealthy male turtles lose interest in mating, and unhealthy female turtles cannot produce hatched eggs or can't bear the strain caused by the production process.

At the end of June 1 1, turtles generally don't eat. Let them take a warm bath first, then dry their bodies, prepare a small cotton pad, wrap it inside, take it out every half month (now my little turtle usually wakes up on time), let them soak in warm water to drink some water, and then put it on the bed and wait for the next time.

There are two ways to spend the winter, one is heating without hibernating, the other is hibernating. Is a completely different concept and practice. So it's cold, so it's better to spend the winter than hibernate.

Don't hibernate to keep warm in winter, as follows:

Use a heating rod to heat the water in the turtle tank, and the water temperature should be about 26 degrees as far as possible. Regarding the water depth of heating rods, heating rods are usually completely immersed in water to operate safely. Please follow the instructions.

Heating rods usually have constant temperature function. You can adjust it to about 26 degrees, and it will automatically turn on and off according to the water temperature there, that is, it will automatically stop heating when it reaches the temperature, and it will automatically heat when the water temperature drops. The details depend on the instructions.

It is very important to put a thermometer in the water and pay attention to the change of water temperature and whether it is close to the adjusted temperature.

Pay attention to the water temperature when changing water. Sometimes the water is too cold for days. Boil the water for a while before adding it to the water tank, so that the heating rod can reach the temperature quickly.

Turtles still have a good appetite for two meals a day in winter and summer; But in fact, one meal a day or every other day should be enough.

Because the Brazilian tortoise moves around 26-27 degrees, a suitable temperature for its hibernation is around 10 to 13 degrees, which is between these two temperatures, especially around 19-22 degrees for a long time. It's not warm enough to stimulate its appetite, but it's been consuming physical strength to make the immune system work effectively, and it's not cold enough to hibernate. Very fragile, easy to get sick.

Therefore, it is best to warm them up when it is cold. If they are really allowed to hibernate, they should be kept at 10 to 13 degrees all winter. Otherwise, they can't really hibernate at all, but go in and out of hibernation repeatedly, consuming physical strength and damaging their health. Therefore, we should choose to keep them warm for the winter instead of hibernating. Especially if you are physically exhausted, don't consider hibernating.

Therefore, there are only two ways to spend the winter. One is to buy a heating rod like summer, and the other is to really hibernate, but hibernation is not a simple thing. There are many things to pay attention to, and we should make some preparations in advance.

The above contents and suggestions are for reference only.

1 1 How to take care of hibernating turtles?

Breeders must rely on their understanding of turtles and their own judgment ability to judge whether their turtles have the conditions for hibernation. You know, any form of hibernation is a very "severe" test for the health of turtles. Because during hibernation, the tortoise will completely shut down the functions of all its organs to ensure that the energy consumption of the body is minimized. If the feeding situation of the tortoise is abnormal, it seems to be malnutrition. The specific symptoms are: the tortoise is thin, the limbs are weak, the skin and muscles are inelastic, and it feels lighter in the hand. Then, letting such a turtle hibernate may be a devastating decision for it.

For turtles living in colder regions, the optimum hibernation temperature should be between 7- 10C, which may be slightly different. If the temperature is too low for a long time, turtles will die. If the temperature is too high, they may not go into hibernation at all. When the temperature is lower than 15C, the tortoise will go into hibernation. If you don't plan to hibernate, keep the temperature at 22C-30C. If the temperature is lower than 15C, and you don't want the tortoise to hibernate, you should gradually raise the temperature, not too fast. Moreover, turtles can't be fed during the transition period, and they can only eat in the environment of 20 C-30 C.

The best time for turtles to hibernate is 3-4 months. Generally, wild turtles hibernate for a long time, but in the case of artificial feeding, shortening the hibernation time appropriately will not have adverse effects on the body.

If the breeder wants to check the hibernating health of the turtle, he should do it at most once a month. Only in a very special emergency can the breeder disturb a hibernating turtle. This kind of inspection can only be carried out occasionally, and it must not be carried out frequently, otherwise it will disturb the hibernation of turtles and make them unable to completely enter the hibernation state, thus making it difficult to achieve the purpose of letting turtles enter hibernation. Too much disturbance is likely to increase the hibernation mortality of turtles.

In addition, once the breeder chooses the feeding containers for hibernating turtles, the breeder must never simply put them at the outside temperature and expect to do so until the turtles finish hibernating. This is true of any kind of turtle, whether it is a water turtle, a semi-water turtle or a tortoise. If the temperature is kept below 3C for a long time, it will produce a very high mortality rate. Before letting the turtle hibernate, it is also necessary to ensure that the turtle's body is completely "emptied" to avoid rectal infarction caused by temperature drop. A simple and obvious method is to let the tortoise take a warm bath for half an hour every day one week before hibernation, which is the key to make the tortoise's gastrointestinal system "clean". Finally, before letting turtles hibernate, let them know whether this turtle has the habit of hibernating. Some breeders indiscriminately try to hibernate those species that are not used to hibernation, which is extremely stupid. The result will only be the death of the tortoise.

Problems that should be paid attention to after hibernation: When the hibernation period is coming to an end, the breeder can "wake up" the hibernating turtle. The breeder should pay attention not to simply move the hibernating turtle to a warm place for convenience, which will cause sudden death or other diseases of the turtle. Therefore, it is necessary to gradually increase the environmental temperature of hibernating turtles, so that turtles have a gradual adaptation process. This process will last for about a week, so don't rush for success!

In addition, the breeder should not be surprised if the turtle just woke up from hibernation has no interest in food and refuses to eat. Like many people who just woke up from hibernation, turtles also feel dizzy and need some time to adjust, but turtles need much more adjustment time than people, about 1-2 days, or longer. Many turtles who have just woken up from hibernation look skinny or malnourished, which is normal according to the usual situation. At this time, the breeder needs some patience. The previous feeds should be small and refined, and appropriate nutritional drugs and antibiotics should be mixed into the feed. Gradually increase the feeding amount, and after a period of time, feed the turtle according to its maximum food intake, so that the turtle can recover as soon as possible.

Winter is the time when most water turtles and turtles living in the wild hibernate. Generally, when the temperature is below 20 degrees, the activities of turtles begin to decrease, and their food intake also decreases, so they eat less or not. Hibernation is usually accompanied by the shortening of the day, the invasion of cold current leads to the lack of food, and the climatic conditions that are not conducive to the normal behavior of reptiles. During hibernation, metabolism in the body slows down, digestion stops, circulation drops, and immune and other self-protection systems also slow down or stop. Because these diseases will take advantage of these changes, some seemingly insignificant ailments will bring great trouble to turtles, so it is suggested that turtle owners should not let sick turtles or weak turtles hibernate. For newly hatched turtles, it is best not to let them hibernate for the first two years. And those turtles brought by heat have no habit of hibernating, so don't let them hibernate. For turtles that are not allowed to hibernate, measures can be taken to raise them by heating when the temperature drops in winter. If it is a turtle, you can use ordinary incandescent bulbs or ordinary desk lamps with special bulbs for reptiles (including ultraviolet rays), electric blankets and heating stones for reptiles, or put electric heaters in the room, but be careful not to let the air be too dry. If it is a turtle, you can put a thermostat in the water (usually available in the ornamental fish market).
