Why are Hami melons so sweet in Xinjiang?

Xinjiang Hami melon is sweet for the following reasons:

Hami melon is mainly produced in Hami, Xinjiang, China and Turpan, where the temperature difference between day and night is large, and the temperature can reach 40 degrees during the day, and it will drop rapidly at night. This kind of weather with large temperature difference between morning and evening and little rain is especially suitable for the growth of cantaloupe. Sufficient sunshine and high temperature during the day increase the intensity of photosynthesis of cantaloupe.

It is located in the Turpan-Hami basin in the east of Xinjiang, and distributed in Turpan and Hami areas in the east-west direction. The north and south face the Tarim Basin and Junggar Basin across the mountain, and the basin is surrounded by mountains, which is a typical continental arid climate. Due to the influence of the northwest mountainous area, the humid airflow is blocked from going south, resulting in extreme dryness, little rain, large evaporation and hot summer in Turpan-Hami basin.

So it also provides the speed of making nutrients. Hami melon converts these nutrients into sugar and stores it in the fruit. At the same time, the lower temperature at night greatly reduces the consumption of nutrients, which is more conducive to the accumulation of sugar in cantaloupe. Hami melon is naturally sweet when its sugar content is high.

Xinjiang Hami melon is a thick-skinned melon with strong or medium growth potential, thick stems, large leaves, light color and flat leaves. The fruit is round, oblong or rectangular, spindle-shaped, with or without reticulation, with or without grooves. The skin of melon is 0.3-0.5 cm thick, the pulp is 2.5-4.0 cm thick, soft or crisp, and the juice is fragrant, mellow or odorless.

The content of soluble solids is 1 1- 15%, up to more than 20%. The average fruit weight is 1.5-5.0 kg, which can reach more than 25 kg.
