World Meteorological Organization and its purpose of establishment

March 23rd every year is World Meteorological Day, which was determined by the World Meteorological Organization in June 1960. Meteorology refers to the state and phenomena of the atmosphere, such as cold, hot, dry, wet, wind, clouds, rain, snow and so on. In order to strengthen international meteorological research and cooperation and better apply meteorological observation results to various practical activities of human beings, the International Meteorological Organization was established in Vienna on 1878. The organization held a meeting of meteorological directors in September 1947, and deliberated and adopted the convention of the World Meteorological Organization, which came into effect on March 23 1950, and the international meteorological organization was renamed the World Meteorological Organization.

1June, 1960, the World Meteorological Organization adopted a resolution to designate March 23rd, the effective date of the Convention, as World Meteorological Day of 196 1 year. The World Meteorological Organization requires member countries to hold celebrations in various ways on this day to publicize the role of meteorology in national economy and national defense construction, and choose a theme for Meteorological Day every year, calling on member countries to carry out publicity activities in various ways. The choice of theme basically revolves around meteorological work content, major scientific research projects and issues of common concern to all countries in the world. The main purpose of World Meteorological Day is to let people of all countries understand and support the activities of the World Meteorological Organization, arouse people's attention and love for meteorological work, and promote the application of meteorology in human activities such as aviation, navigation, water conservancy and agriculture.

It has been 50 years since the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Its members have grown from 30 in the early days to 185 today, including Africa, Central and Eastern Europe and the Southwest Pacific. Among them, 179 members and 6 regional members (including China, Hong Kong, China and Macau, China) have become the most representative and cooperative international organizations.

For decades, the World Meteorological Organization has provided services for the economic development of the international community, assisted member meteorological departments to provide timely and accurate weather forecasts and warnings, and made contributions to the social and economic development of the region and even the world.
