Reasons for the formation of the Yellow River Delta

The formation of the Yellow River Delta is the result of land reclamation by the Yellow River. The Yellow River has a high sediment concentration and a large annual sediment discharge, which provides a rich material source for the formation of the Yellow River Delta.

I. Location of the Yellow River Delta

The Yellow River Delta is located in Dongying City and Binzhou City, Shandong Province, China, on the south bank of Bohai Bay and the west bank of Laizhou Bay. It is a combination of ancient, modern and modern deltas. Among them, the narrow Yellow River Delta takes Ninghai (Lijinxia 14 km) as its apex, reaches Tu Hai in the northwest and Xiaoqing River in the southeast, covering an area of more than 5,400 square kilometers.

Second, the formation and changes of the Yellow River Delta

From BC 1 and 3000 to AD 1 128, the Yellow River was introduced into the Bohai Sea from Tianjin, Cangzhou and Huanghua, forming an ancient delta along the Bohai Sea.

2. During the period from1128 to 1855, the Yellow River formed an abandoned Yellow River Delta in the coastal area of Jiangsu in the Yellow Sea.

3. Since 1855, the Yellow River has been diverted at Tongwa Cavity in Lankao, captured the Daqing River and entered the Bohai Sea, forming a modern Yellow River Delta.

Third, the climate characteristics of the Yellow River Delta.

The climate type of the Yellow River Delta belongs to the continental monsoon climate of warm temperate zone, with the characteristics of Leng Xia fever in winter and distinct seasons.

It is dry and windy in spring, with changeable temperature in early spring, often cold in late spring and rapid in late spring, which often causes spring drought. Summer is hot and rainy, hot and humid, and sometimes it is attacked by typhoons. In autumn, the temperature drops, the rain drops sharply, and the sky is crisp. In winter, the weather is dry and cold, with frequent cold winds and scarce rain and snow.

Geomorphological characteristics of the Yellow River Delta

I. Delta Plain

The Yellow River Delta is an alluvial plain formed by the deposition of a large amount of sediment carried by the Yellow River in Bohai Depression. Its landform is mainly reed swamp and wetland, followed by estuary beach, Suaeda salsa salt marsh, shrub wetland and artificial Sophora japonica wetland. These landform types have formed rich ecosystems and biodiversity in the delta region.

Second, the terrain is flat.

The Yellow River Delta is flat, which is lower than the altitude10m. The fan-shaped terrain spreading eastward is less than15m above sea level and covers an area of 5,450km2. This flat terrain makes the delta area easy for agricultural development.

Thirdly, estuarine wetlands.

The Yellow River Estuary Wetland Ecotourism Area covers an area of 230,000 mu, all of which are in the Yellow River Delta. Wetland is an important ecological resource in the delta region, which provides breeding and habitat for many rare and endangered birds.
