Dongting Lake, formerly known as Yunmeng, Jiujiang and Chonghu, is located on the south bank of Jingjiang River in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, spanning Yueyang, Miluo, Xiangyin, Wangcheng, Yiyang, Yuanjiang, Hanshou, Changde, Tianjin, Anxiang and Nanxian counties and cities. The name of Dongting Lake began in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and it was named after Dongting Mountain (now Junshan Mountain) in the lake.

Dongting Lake receives water from Songzi, Taiping, ouchi and Diaoxian counties of the Yangtze River, connects with four small tributaries of Hunan, Zi, Yuan and Li in the south and west, and flows into the Yangtze River from Chenglingji, Yueyang City.

Dongting Lake was called "Eight Hundred Li Dongting Lake" in ancient times. At the end of 1990s, it was estimated by the water conservancy department that there was an area of 2,579.2 square kilometers. However, it also has four major rivers, namely, Xiang, Zi, Yuan and Li, and the flood discharge area of "the four mouths of the Yangtze River" 1.300 square kilometers.

Dongting Lake was formed by Yanshan movement fault depression, which has been oscillating in negative direction since Quaternary, forming a dish-shaped basin with high periphery and low middle. Taohua Mountain, Taiyang Mountain, Tai Fu Shan and other island-like mountain protrusions about 500 meters, and the hills around the lake are below 250 meters above sea level.

The lakeside hills below120m are erosion terraces, and those below 60m are basement and accumulation terraces; The central accumulation plain is composed of lake deposits, alluvial rivers and lakes, estuary deltas and outer lakes, mostly 25-45 meters, showing the landform of water network plain.

Dongting Lake is divided into West Dongting Lake, South Dongting Lake and East Dongting Lake. The ground at the bottom of the lake slopes slightly from northwest to southeast. Dongting Lake presents the landscape of water swamp and river network plain, surrounded by mountains on the east, south and west, and is a horseshoe-shaped basin with high north and low southeast.
