How did the Ming Dynasty lose Daning House and Dongsheng Wei in the north?
From February, the third year of Hongwu, when the Ming Dynasty formally occupied Dongsheng County, to July, the fifth year of Hongwu, when Dongsheng Wei moved its capital to Datong, the Ming Dynasty maintained its control over Dongsheng for a little over two years. Although the Ming army suffered a crushing defeat in the north and the border guards moved inward, it is also a fact that Beiyuan was unable to launch a counterattack similar to that of a few years ago, and some remnants of Beiyuan, who were caught in internal disputes, still surrendered to the Ming Dynasty one after another, including Dongsheng people, such as "Ding You, more than 5,900 Tatars who came to Dongsheng in October of Hongwu five years, living in Lin Hao, paid by rice every month" (Volume 7) It is precisely because the Ming Dynasty gave up the idea of comprehensive. Limited by its own strength, Beiyuan was unable to effectively rule the region, and Dongsheng became a special zone with the same power as Beiyuan but lacked effective management. Therefore, when dealing with these people in distress, the Ming Dynasty could only adopt the practice of emigrating to the mainland. In addition, a large number of people living in the border areas could not be effectively controlled, and the Ming Dynasty was not sure about the feelings of the local people, so it had to move the border people to the mainland. In October of the sixth year of Hongwu, Bingzi went to the deserts of Hongzhou, Yuzhou, Ding, An, Wu, Shuo, Tiancheng, Dongsheng, Feng and Yunnei counties in northern Shanxi, and was repeatedly looted by Hu Kou. He ordered Jiang Wen to move his residence to Neutral Mansion, with 8,238 households, accounting for 39,349 households, and the officials gave donkeys, oxen, carts and households. This large-scale border migration, the destination is Fengyang. In addition to the Han people in the border areas, the relocated people must include Mongolian households. The inward migration of border people objectively eliminated the material incentives for the Yuan army to plunder south, reduced economic losses and reduced the amount of defense tasks. At the same time, it also blocked the contact between the Yuan army and the border people to a certain extent, which was conducive to preventing the Yuan army from "spying on the border". In fact, the immigration of border people is a supplement to the system of "only one thousand households" and "no department" in the border area, which further strengthens the military color of extreme border areas.
