Funny humor. Is it interesting?
Donald Hoffman
1 In an interesting story, the pleasure of laughing is ubiquitous and may be as old as the language itself. But what makes a story or joke interesting?
Ever since I first realized that humorous people like humor, I have tried to explain and discuss humor in such diverse cultures as Latin America and China. I've been thinking about some interesting stories. This has always been a labor of love!
After I told a joke, several students in one class fell off their chairs, while the other students looked as if I had just watched the weather forecast. Obviously, some people are more sensitive than others. Moreover, we realize that some people tell jokes very well, while others find it difficult to tell interesting things. Everyone has heard someone say, "I like joking, but I can't speak it well and I will never remember it." Some people have a better sense of humor than others, just as some people are more talented in music and mathematics. A really interesting person has a joke. Every time, when a person is told, a whole series of jokes will be triggered from that person's memory bank. A person who lacks a sense of humor cannot be the most popular in a group. It stands to reason that a truly humorous person not only likes it very much, but also tends to concentrate on any party.
Even some animals have a sense of humor. My wife's mother often comes to see us to extend her stay. She doesn't like dogs at ordinary times, but she fell in love with us in the lightning women's laboratory. Our relationship is mutual. Even when I was young, lightning would make fun of grandma for selectively bringing slippers from the bedroom into the living room, and grandma would sit in her favorite and comfortable chair. Lightning only surrounded grandma until grandma asked her to change the chair from lightning to slippers. When grandma leaves the chair, lightning will quickly jump on the chair, flashing her lab smile and brown eyes, and clearly say, "Aha, you have been cheated by me again.
Five typical jokes or humorous stories, with one or three anatomical parts, are easy to identify. The first is the setting (or setting), and the second is the text (or story line). These are all perforated (an unexpected or surprising ending), and if they contain some humor, they will make the joke interesting. Usually these three parts exist, and each one must be clearly presented. Tellers of stories or jokes use gestures and words to help the audience, which is very helpful.
Humor, as a form of entertainment, can be analyzed to find out what makes an interesting story or joke look interesting. For example, here are some of the most common types of humor. They range from the most obvious humor to the more subtle types.
7 "burlesque" is the most obvious humor. Its language is simple and direct, and it often makes other people or groups happy. It takes a slap in the face to make a ring. It is the skill of comedians and clowns who stand up. It appeals to all ages and all cultures. In this century, almost every English-speaking comedian uses jokes in one form or another. One man asked another, "Who is the lady I saw you last night?" The other replied, "No woman, this is my wife." The humorous fact is that another man said that his wife is not a woman. In other words, she is not a delicate woman. Jokes are not so interesting because they are used too often. The audience knows what to say in advance, because it is classic humor, any audience's values, because it is familiar.
China's "cross talk" is a special kind of cross talk, in which two China comedians talk humorously about topics such as bureaucracy, family problems or other personal problems. Radio and TV can be heard everywhere from small villages to the largest theater in Beijing. This is obviously a traditional form of humor understood by China people.
A game of words is not obviously a slap in the face, but it is interesting because of the misuse or misunderstanding of language. My favorite example is the story of three old people traveling in England by train. When the train slowed down and stopped, the first man asked, "Is this Wembley Stadium?" "No," said the second, "today is Thursday." "I said," said the third person. Let's stop for a beer. "We know that old people often don't know what they hear, so Wednesday's misunderstanding (Wembley) longs for the third-person punch line (Thursday).
10 Ding Cong, a famous cartoonist and humorist in China, is a master of word games. In one of his funny cartoons, a teacher said, "How can you completely copy other people's homework?" The young student replied, "I didn't copy it completely." My name is different on this page. In another classic, an angry father asked, "Tell me, what is one plus two?" "The son said," I don't know, "the impatient father continued," You, your mother, you idiot, how much am I worth? The son proudly replied, "Three fools". Whether these stories are cartoons, funny comedians with paragraphs or a cross talk team, the people they attract are all interesting stories, because they have a concerned reality and unexpected quips, which are very interesting.
Pun 1 1 is a more subtle word game. They use similar pronunciations or other meanings of the same words. Some critics think puns are the lowest level of humor, but I disagree. Puns require more subtle and complicated language skills than other forms of humor, but even very young children can use simple forms. For example, "riddle" or "prank" questions usually use puns, storylines, or more commonly quips. Pun is the first humor I learned. When I was about five years old, I remember hearing the following riddle. A man asked, "Everything is black, white and red?" People usually can't solve this riddle, so they say, "I give up." What is the answer? "People answered," newspaper ". This is the obvious answer, if you know that the pronunciation of "red" is the same as that of "reading" English, but the meaning is obviously different.
12 double-entres (double meaning in French) is a special form of pun, in which words or phrases have double meanings. These two meanings are quite different, one is quite appropriate, the other is frequent, but not always vulgar. I like a short story about a school teacher and a high school principal, because some boys and girls are kissing on the school playground. The teacher said to the students, "The headmaster and I decided not to kiss on the school playground." Hearing some laughter, she felt that her message was not completely clear, so she added, "I mean, no more kissing under our noses." . This clarification, of course, did not correct the double meaning of the first sentence and joke, but it was even more ridiculous.
13 Some humorous writers believe that too much humor today is clever or complicated. They don't like to use too many hints or vulgar language, and they think the most humorous people are very creative. It's true, some humor today is quite shocking, but I don't think humor is the culprit. Humor is energetic, and it will persist, because interesting things happen every day. Some humorous people can see and hear these interesting things and turn them into interesting jokes and stories.
Fatal attraction
1 The "queen" of the British murder mystery is undoubtedly Christie Agatha. Although the author herself died 20 years ago, her 78 detective novels are still very popular. They have been translated into more than 100 languages and sold more than 2 billion copies.
The attraction of Christie Agatha's books in Britain and abroad is understandable. Every book is cleverly conceived. What she uses is easy to identify, and she is almost like a clock in the development of the plot of the characters. But most importantly, all her stories set a mystery for readers.
Almost all of Christie's works come from a murder case, forcing readers to ask: "Who did it?" Everything ends in a solution. The reader's pleasure is to hide in the clues of the story and try to reach the correct answer before the author reveals it. This formula has attracted the instinctive curiosity of human beings, and its popularity shows no signs of disappearing.
Many mysteries have been solved by Christie's routine investigation, such as the confident Belgian detective Poirot, or the seemingly harmless little old lady Miss Ma Puer. She also created a special story for her story, just like a character she is familiar with. This is the weekend when the two world wars in Britain are closely linked. Communities live in quiet villages or rich cities, and people gather in the houses of big countries.
The world is ruled by a strict social class. The master of the country, who may be a member of the nobility, is at the highest level, and then the professional category: doctor, lawyer, businessman. At the bottom are ordinary people who usually appear in books, such as servants, chefs, gardeners and so on. When a murder happens, there is no need to be investigated.
Christie Agatha's world is not a real world, which is one of the reasons why her books are not out of date. This is a safe and predictable world, and a murder has disrupted people's lives. The crime that must be solved enables the murderer to be arrested, but it also restores calm.
In the life of Christie Agatha, Britain sentenced to death for murder. Therefore, once the crimes in her book are solved, the murderer decides that this is his or her end. Without a loose ending, readers can sleep quietly in their own beds.
In the real world, of course, this will not happen. Criminals are at large, and people are wrongly convicted. In short, the real world is not a safe place. It is for this reason that many readers like to bury their heads in an old-fashioned detective novel with a safe and predictable ending.
Agatha christie's nine detective stories are certainly old-fashioned. Few contemporary crime writers have written such books. Modern detective novels are more complicated morally and psychologically, and often ask "Who did it?" Another question: "novels with criminal motives?" Modern writers are more interested in understanding criminals' thoughts and letting a person kill. They explored a darker world of crime than Christie Agatha imagined. Most contemporary crime novels make readers feel uneasy, not comforted.
10 But Britain's love for what Americans call "comfort" crime novels is not dead. Murder is still regarded as entertainment, and TV programs are full of detective dramas, ending with the arrest of the murderer.
Another sign of 1 1 is how popular mystery novels have become "murder mystery weekend", which is provided by the hotel. The guests put the suspects in the classic detective novels together and tried to find out who was the "murderer" at the weekend. Or a murder party, where a group of friends get together to solve a crime dinner and use specially prepared information, their personalities and their whereabouts. If your meal is not murdered, there are a series of popular card games and computer games to test your detection ability.
12 but for some people, this may become a problem. Up to now, letters have been sent to "London Baker Street 22 1B", the home of Sherlock Holmes, perhaps the most famous detective in all novels, asking him to help solve various mysteries. The detective received many letters, and now he has occupied this address and hired a special person to answer them.
13 As long as human beings are curious, there is no doubt that detective stories, in various forms, will continue to exert their fatal attraction.
Wow, am I willing to do this?
1 I became interested in myself when I was 16 years old. I watched a TV advertisement, and the two families began to watch canned frozen orange juice over and over again and play acrobatics.
Wow, am I willing to do this? I imagined myself performing in front of an applauding audience.
3 opportunities to be fat. If I know what to do, I'm afraid of dying in front of the audience. But then a strange coincidence happened, which made you think it was an answer to prayer, even if you didn't really pray. A few days later, my brother Jeff and I went to visit some friends. A boy my age said, "Hey, you should see my brother learn to do this." He took me to his brother's room. The big boy was teaching Jeff to play golf.
I said, "I also want to learn.
I get hooked when I have no time. Although I threw a lot of balls at first, I was surprised to find how easily I was caught. First, I threw the ball from one hand to the other. Then I tried to keep them in the air with two balls and one hand.
I finally got three balls ready. The pattern is simple: I have two golf balls in my right hand and one in my left. I threw the ball into the air from my right hand until it reached the top. Then I threw the ball to my left hand and let the two balls pass to each other. I passed the ball with my right hand before, and then a ball dropped. I dropped the ball back and forth. When I dropped one, I started. I will throw the ball to 10 at night.
This is a challenge, and I must perfect this skill. The next day, I practiced tennis three times in the garage until I could play 20 tennis. I use my revenge. I want to be as good as those people.
When I became better, I began to add some pitching skills, let one go over someone's head, or on someone else, or I bounced one from my head or elbow, and still maintained the pattern.
Funny thing is, I thought I was playing those tricks. But one day I found a book in the library and had all the skills I was doing! The basic mode of three balls is cascade, in which throwing a ball in a circle is a shower and throwing a ball at the top is a semi-shower.
10 I bought a set of clubs to play with, and so did my parents. I perform for my family and some friends, but I never consider myself an actor. Entertainment means standing in front of an audience. No I can't do it.
1 1, so five years later, when I was 2 1, my mother took me aside and said, "Dan, what do you want to do for the Salvation Army dinner this year?" In the past two years, my mother and boss helped him at the New Year's Eve dinner.
12 "There are other forms of entertainment," she quickly added. All you need to do is stand on the side of the auditorium at dinner. "
13 A few days before Christmas, when people walked into the auditorium, I was on a small stage, on one side of the hall. I was nervous, but somehow it gave me courage. I began to play my tricks, including the one I recently mastered: playing behind my back. Then I was at the club, with my last bowling ball and two balls. The children crowded on the stage with smiles. People applauded.
14 suddenly felt more excited than ever. I performed for the audience and they loved it!
15 has been practicing at home. I started playing with cigar boxes, knives and torches. When an uncle gave me his unicycle, I learned to ride a bike and play with it.
16 I began to want to be a major. I know I'm going to do more than just tricks, I'm going to say jokes and so on. This is what the book says. So I prayed. When I got down in front of my house, I added some jokes. I hope my family can help me do the same thing in public.
My chance will come soon. You want me to burn a Polynesian fashion show. I am barefoot, topless, wearing silly shorts, and my face is painted with black stripes. When I was ready to continue, someone handed me a list of announcements. "Please read these when you finish your behavior," said the hostess of the ceremony. It's too late, too late.
18 I'm nervous! I dropped the torch three times! But I don't want the audience to know how nervous I am. I try to make my mistakes look like part of my behavior. I danced in the madness of torches and made the sound of the jungle until I could pick them up and continue my juggling. People applauded. They like my behavior. I read the announcement.
19 I received a phone call from the principal of a local primary school next month. An old actor once called in sick. Can I fill it out? Does it also include a message? "Of course," I said.
Three weeks later, I stood in front of a couple's children. Using one of my examples, I started my information. When I started playing, I let the ball go. I picked them up and threw them away.
2 1 I said, "This is when you start. But as the program progressed, I began to do more tricks, juggle, ride a unicycle, sit-ups, return my feet, and didn't lose a goal.
Twenty-two minutes later, I finished the performance of the last sentence of the children: "If you want to succeed, you must continue to work hard. You can do it. Just don't give up. "
The power of notes
1 In my first job as a sports editor, a leading enterprise in Montpellier (Ohio), I didn't receive many emails from fans, so one morning a letter that interested me was thrown on my desk.
Open it and it says, "A very good article was written in Tiger. Keep working hard, "this is the signature of sports editor Wolff. "Because I am a teenager (I paid 15 cents), his words couldn't be more encouraging. 1 1 Put the letter in my desk drawer until it is turned over. Whenever I doubt that I am not a writer's material, I will review my notes and regain my confidence.
Later, when I got to know him, I learned a habit of writing a quick and encouraging word to people from all walks of life. When I made others feel good, he said to me, "I feel good, too."
Not surprisingly, he has a friend as big as Lake Erie nearby. When he died at the age of 75 last year, the person who wrote this letter was overwhelmed by the phone calls and letters of people driven by his spirit.
For more than five years, I have been trying to imitate the example of Tang and other friends. They have enough time to write exciting comments because I think they are very important. In a world that is often cold and unresponsive, such notes bring warmth and comfort. We all need a time to improve, and some compliments are called a turning point in a day, even a lifetime.
So, why are there so many optimistic note writers? My guess is that many shy practices are too self-centered. They are afraid of being misunderstood, and their voices will be sentimental or hypocritical. Besides, writing takes time, which makes it easier to pick up the phone.
Of course, the disadvantage of telephones is that they don't last. A piece of paper pays more attention to our wishes. This is a record, and our words can be read several times, savored and treasured.
Although it may take longer to take notes, some very busy people, including George. Some people say that his success is due to the pen he prepared. How's it going? Almost every time in his career, he will get a kind response, praise, praise or thanks. His notes are not only for friends and colleagues, but also for casual acquaintances and strangers, such as those who are surprised by the warm pat on the back of the loan.
Even the top company managers are mostly influenced by their leadership style, which is characterized by toughness, indifference and indifference. They begin to learn this lesson, and they can benefit from it, so that people can be promoted. Peterson Donald, the former chairman of Ford, owes much to turning the company into an activity in the 1980s. He writes positive messages every day. "I just write in the corner of my notes or letters and pass them on," he said. The most important ten minutes of your day are what people who work for you do to promote your work.
10 He said, "The people we really like don't know how we feel about them. We often think, I didn't say anything. The point is, why should I say something positive? We forget that human beings need to be actively strengthened. In fact, we are thriving in it!
1 1 What can I write to write an uplifting letter? Only willing to express our gratitude. The most successful practitioners include what I call four "notes".
1 12) They are sincere. No one wants false compliments.
They are usually short. If you can't say the three words you want to say, you may be nervous.
They are concrete. Praise a business partner and tell him that "good" remarks are too vague; "About Warren? The great story of Buffett's investment strategy is accurate.
4 15) They are spontaneous. This gives them a sense of freshness and enthusiasm that lingers in readers' minds.
16 when you are looking for writing materials for letters, it is difficult to be spontaneous, so I will keep paper, envelopes and stamps in my hand, even if it is my trip. Fancy stationery is unnecessary, it counts, it counts.
17 so, who is by your side, do you deserve an explanation of thanks or approval? Neighbors, your librarian, relatives, your mayor, your partner, your teacher, your doctor? No need for poetry. If you need a reason, look for a milestone, a special event, your birthday, or a birthday or holiday. For example, in the past 25 years, I have prepared a letter from Santa Claus every year and often added a handwritten thank-you note to you. Considering the spirit of Christmas, it seems particularly appropriate to acknowledge some successes or good luck that happened during the year.
18 You should praise your writing. Favorite "greatness", "cleverest" and "beauty" make us all feel good. Even if your praise is a little ahead of reality, remember that expectation is the realization of parents' dreams.
Today, I received a warm and free letter from my former boss and mentor norman vincent peale. He filled my little note with exciting words. It sent me to the typewriter and wrote some letters of my own. I don't know if they will let others one day, but they let me have it. As my friend Wolf said, I will feel good if I make others feel good.
