Characteristics of Cantonese in Hong Kong

Guangzhou dialect, also known as "Guangfu dialect" and "vernacular", belongs to Cantonese and is the representative dialect of Cantonese. It is popular in the Pearl River Delta, central Guangdong and northern Guangdong with Guangzhou as the center, and Cantonese, which is popular in Hong Kong and Macao, also belongs to this area. "Guangzhou dialect" in a narrow sense refers to Cantonese, which is popular in Guangzhou. It is slightly different from Cantonese in Hong Kong, with fewer loanwords, less English mixed in the discourse and slower speech speed.

Hong Kong Cantonese, or "Hong Kong Dialect", is a local dialect of Cantonese. From the perspective of communicative function, there is no qualitative difference between Hong Kong dialect and Guangzhou dialect, and residents of the two places can communicate freely in their respective dialects. But as far as the social status of dialects is concerned, Hong Kong dialect is quite different from Guangzhou dialect. Cantonese plays an important role in Hong Kong. Although English has great influence as one of the official languages (the other is Chinese), Cantonese has an overwhelming advantage in the general public and the media. Hong Kong Cantonese has a relatively independent writing system (dialect characters) and many dialect media, which further expands the influence of Hong Kong culture. These features are lacking in Cantonese in the Mainland.

From the language itself, Hong Kong dialect also has some noteworthy features: in phonetics, the flat tone tends to be 55, while Guangzhou dialect generally has 53 and 55 pronunciations, such as "Gong". Guangzhou dialect is used to reading 53, while Hong Kong dialect is used to reading 55. In addition, the phenomenon of "lazy voice" is more obvious among the younger generation.

Because of the fast pace of life, Hong Kong people speak faster than Guangzhou people. In terms of vocabulary, Hong Kong dialect mostly uses loanwords, especially English loanwords, such as "fare", and Guangzhou dialect is used to using "ticket". It is common for educated people to talk in English, such as "I'm going to the canteen" (let's go to the canteen). In loanwords, the translation of names and places is different from that of Cantonese (Cantonese follows the translation of Putonghua). In addition, Hong Kong dialect contains a large number of "regional words" (such as Chief Executive, Department of Justice and Home Ownership Scheme) and unique terms (such as "black rain" black rainstorm warning, "doctoral thesis" sick leave list, "lost youth" and "unemployed youth"), which reflect the unique social features of Hong Kong and are rarely used in Guangzhou.
