The meaning of Zhu Shouchang abandoning his official position to seek his mother

It tells the story of Zhu Shouchang giving up being an official in order to find his mother. This is the twenty-third story in "Twenty-Four Filial Piety".

In the Song Dynasty, there was a man named Zhu Shouchang, who was also a well-known filial son. His biological mother was Mrs. Liu, and his first wife was jealous that she had a child and drove her out of the Zhu family. Since then, mother and son have been separated and have not been able to see each other for fifty years.

For fifty years, he missed his mother all the time. Everywhere he went as an official, he would look for traces of her. But it’s not easy to find someone in a huge crowd.

When Song Shenzong was in power, he no longer wanted to be an official and decided to resign his official position to find his mother. Before leaving, he informed his family of his decision and swore: "If I can't find my mother, I will never go home in this life!"

This time, he focused on finding his mother in Qin ( Today's Shaanxi). Later, after going through all kinds of hardships, he finally found his mother in Tongzhou (now Dali County, Shaanxi Province). Liu was already in her seventies at that time.
