The viscosity of engine oil used in winter should be as small as possible, but it must be determined according to the local temperature and car grade. The viscosity of 5W/40 engine oil at low temperature is lower than that of 15W/40 engine oil, which makes it easier to protect the engine at the moment of cold start.
