What is the irrigation project suitable for local natural conditions in Xinjiang? It's called Gong Linjing.

Its name is Karez.

"The water in Karez is melted ice and snow flowing down from Tianshan Mountain. The hotter the weather, the colder the water. " Abby Bai, a commentator at the Kanerjing Folk Garden, said. Karez is divided into four parts: shaft, open channel, culvert and water storage dam. The longest karez is more than 20 kilometers.

It is reported that digging a karez takes as few years as ten years. The amount of work is huge, and the soil in Karez is hard. The culvert is1.2m high and 70cm wide. At that time, all the diggers were kneeling, sitting and crawling forward, and they had to move the soil out constantly, which was time-consuming and laborious to dig.

So far, Karez is still used for farmland irrigation in Turpan area. Karez is 98 meters deep and 3 to 5 meters shallow. In Karez, sometimes falling rocks fall. In order to keep the well water in Karez flowing, it is necessary to clean up the silt from time to time.

Extended data:

Karez consists of shaft, underground channel (culvert), surface channel (open channel) and "waterlogging dam" (small reservoir). Excavators look for water at the undercurrent of alpine snow and water, drill some shafts with different depths at regular intervals, and then build culverts at the bottom of the well according to the terrain to communicate with the wells and draw water downstream.

The outlet of the underground channel is connected with the ground channel, which leads the underground water to irrigate the mulberry field. Karez gathers underground undercurrents to form an underground river, which protects precious water sources from high temperature, strong winds and sandstorms as much as possible and maintains a stable flow.

It flows naturally along the terrain and comes out of the ground from Longkou (Tianshan snow water permeates the stratum and flows to the first exit of the open channel through the culvert), which provides a relatively low-cost water source for oasis life.
