[Edit this paragraph] The legend of narcissus

Chinese legend:

It is said that narcissus is the incarnation of Emperor Yao's daughter Ehuang and Nvying. The two of them married Shun together. The elder sister was the queen and the younger sister was the concubine. The three of them had a very good relationship. Shun died while on tour in the south, and both Ehuang and Nvying died in love in the Xiangjiang River. God took pity on their true love and transformed their souls into riverside narcissus, and they also became the flower gods of narcissus in the twelfth lunar month. Based on this, the predecessors wrote many poems praising narcissus, such as Cao Zhi's "Luo Shen Fu", and Gao Sisun's "Front and Back Poems on Narcissus" in the Song Dynasty. If the beauty of the narcissus they describe is condensed into one point, it is "purity".

It is said that there was a kind-hearted peasant woman in Yuanshan, Caiban Village, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, who helped a beggar who was dying of hunger. The beggar turned out to be a god, and he sprayed the rice he ate around the house, and later daffodils grew. The meaning of giving daffodils among the people is to praise you for your good intentions and good luck, and to wish you good luck and everything goes well.

Western legend:

The English name for narcissus is Narcissus, and the English name for narcissism is Narcissism. The connection between the two is such a Greek myth.

Narcissus is a beautiful boy in Greek mythology. His father is a river god and his mother is a fairy. After Nassos was born, his mother received an oracle: Nassos would be the most beautiful man in the world when he grew up; however, he would die in depression because he was obsessed with his own appearance. In order to avoid the fulfillment of the oracle, Nassos' mother deliberately arranged for her son to grow up in the mountains and forests, away from streams, lakes, and seas, so that Nassos would never be able to see his face. As his mother wished, Nassos grew up peacefully in the mountains and forests, and as the oracle predicted, he was extremely handsome and became the most beautiful man in the world. Every girl who met him fell deeply in love with him. However, Nassos was arrogant and no woman could win his love. He only likes to hunt in the mountains and forests with his friends all day long, and he disdains the young girl who falls in love with him.

Echo, the forest goddess, fell in love with Nassos at first sight, but was unable to express her feelings and could only simply repeat what others said. Nassos ignored her infatuation. Nassos's hard heart broke her heart. She asked Venus to punish him and make him suffer painful torture. Melancholy, expectation, and finding nothing made her leave her former companions and walk into the forest aimlessly. Here, her sadness only increased

and her face was haggard. She disappeared from the mountains and forests, but her soft voice always lingered in the valley. If you walk in the silent forest, she will respond to your voice. This is Echo - Echo.

Nassos' cold face and stone heart broke the girl's heart. Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, couldn't stand it and decided to teach him a lesson. One day, Nassos was hunting in the wild. The weather was extremely hot. After a while, he was sweating profusely. At this moment, a breeze blew, exuding coolness, and he walked forward following the wind. As I walked around, I came across a lake with water as clear as a mirror. The lake is unfamiliar to Nassos. Nassos walked over and sat by the lake. He was about to reach out and touch the lake water to see what it felt like. Unexpectedly, when he focused on the smooth mirror-like surface of the lake, he saw a perfect face. , couldn't help being shocked, Nassos thought to himself: Who is this beauty? She is so beautiful. After staring for a while, he realized that when he waved to the beauty in the water, the beauty in the water waved to him; when he smiled to the beauty in the water, the beauty in the water also smiled to him; but when he reached out to touch the beauty, the beauty in the water also waved to him. Then she disappeared immediately; when he retracted his hand, the beauty reappeared after a while, and looked at him affectionately. Of course Nassos didn't know that what appeared on the lake was actually his own reflection. He actually fell deeply in love with his reflection. In order not to lose the people in the lake, he guarded the lake day and night. As the days passed, Nassos still stayed by the lake without sleeping or eating, willing to be the patron saint of the beauty in his heart. Sometimes he lay down by the lake to rest, sometimes he walked around the lake shore, but his eyes could never be separated from the reflection in the water, and he always stared at the lake intently. In the end, the oracle came true. Nassos died sitting by the lake because he was obsessed with his own reflection.

After the fairies knew this, they were heartbroken and rushed to the lake to bury Nassos' body properly. But the lakeside where Nassos used to sit was empty except for a cluster of strange little flowers. It turns out that the God of Love took pity on Nassos and turned him into a narcissus, which bloomed where there was water, so that he could always look at his reflection. That cluster of strange little flowers, quiet, refined and proud, is very beautiful. In order to commemorate Nassus, the fairies named this flower Narcissus, which means narcissus. And this is why daffodils always grow near water. Because of this story, people use Narcissism to describe people who are extremely fond of their own appearance and have narcissistic tendencies.

Another version said that the Swamp Fairy fell in love with him, and when she made friends with him, he saw his own reflection in the eyes of the Swamp Fairy. He wanted to see it again, so the Swamp Fairy The fairy lied to her that it was her soul and lured it into her own world. and killed him in the swamp.
