What feed does sturgeon eat?

Sturgeon fry eat biological bait, including rotifer, Artemia, Daphnia, earthworm and so on. Because biological bait is attractive, palatable and does not pollute water quality, most breeders use biological bait to open their mouths.

Sturgeon adults eat fish meal, yeast, blood meal, wheat, corn, silkworm chrysalis and other granular substances.

Sturgeon culture:

The cages are 5m× 5m and 4m× 4m, and the net is made of polyethylene. Mesh size depends on the specifications of sturgeon species. Based on the principle of not escaping fish, being conducive to water exchange and not leaking bait from the bottom net, the cage should be set in a place with good water quality and a water depth of more than 8m, and at the same time, it should have the conditions of micro-flow, shelter from wind, sunshine and wide water surface. Large reservoirs should choose suitable bays to set cages, and small reservoirs should choose places not far from the dam.

The cage is set in the middle of April when the fry are stocked, and the net has no rough feeling after being soaked in the reservoir water, which reduces the chance that the fish in the box are scratched by the net due to environmental changes.

The suitable stocking time is in the middle and late April, and the water temperature is about 10- 15℃, which is the best growth temperature of sturgeon. The larger the stocking specification, the better, generally 75- 150g/ tail, and the stocking density is 40-50 tail /m2. Fish are disinfected with 3%-4% salt water before entering the box, and the temperature difference between transport water and reservoir water is not more than 5℃.

Feed can be artificially mixed with granular materials, the protein content should be 42%-45%, and the stability of granular materials in water should be high and kept for more than half an hour. Fish should stop feeding for 2-3 days after entering the box to let the fish adapt to the environment. Start feeding after 2-3 days, and feed for many times at the beginning.

The particle size of bait should be adjusted in time with the increase of fish body to achieve palatability. Feed sturgeon once every morning, noon and evening. Sturgeon has the habit of feeding at night, and the daily feeding amount is 2%-4% of the fish weight in the box. The feeding amount depends on the weather, water temperature and the feeding situation of the fish.

Extended data

Sturgeon has a very narrow feeding habit and belongs to carnivorous fish. It mainly feeds on some small or slow-moving benthos. In the ocean, fish are the main food, followed by crustaceans and mollusks. Young sturgeons in estuaries mainly eat benthic fishes, such as Ophiuchus and pupae, krill and Agkistrodon halys, and generally stop eating during spawning.

Sturgeon is an animal-eating fish, which can prey on zooplankton in the early stage of feeding, but soon the fry develop into benthos. In line with this way of life, the mouth of sturgeon is prominent and inferior at this time. The favorite foods of sturgeon vary with species, and the main foods are water worms, crustaceans, mollusks and small fish. Sturgeon fry can be directly fed with artificial compound feed after eating. In actual production, sturgeon fry often use live bait (zooplankton or chopped water earthworm) that has just been eaten.
