Sunrise delay photography skills
Dark blue sky, flaming clouds, sunsets and sunrises always make photographers unconsciously press the shutter, although this has been repeated countless times ... How to shoot touching sunrise and sunset scenes, here are some precautions and shooting skills for you.
Matters needing attention and shooting skills of sunrise and sunset
Prepare items:
1, where to shoot
The idea of shooting the sunrise and sunset came into being. The first question to consider next is: Where should I shoot the sunrise and sunset?
Everyone knows that the sun rises and sets in the west and crosses the sky from left to right. Before shooting, you need to think about the effect you want to shoot in advance. Generally choose places with a wide view: beaches, lakes, hilltops and even the roofs of cities.
Of course, you must choose a place where you can see the sunrise or sunset. If conditions permit, it is best to shoot in the wild. After all, the air in the wild is much more thorough than in the city. But if you shoot in the city, you can also take very good photos.
But whether in the wild or in the city, the location should be relatively open and the terrain should be high. When shooting in the wild, choose a higher place, such as the mountain, and choose the angle of view from high to low, so that there will be no unnecessary objects blocking the sun nearby and on the ground, which is conducive to the performance of the main content. When the sun rises, the mountain peaks will have rich effects in the big backlight. If you shoot in a city, you can choose a higher building with the same effect and richer levels.
In addition, a higher shooting viewpoint is also beneficial to improve the contrast and composition of the picture. Of course, it doesn't mean that you have to choose highland to shoot this kind of theme. If your location has a wide view, such as the Great Lakes, this location is also an excellent location for shooting sunrises and sunsets. So don't have a fixed mentality when choosing a shooting location, as long as you can show your own photography creativity, it is a great shooting location. The choice of location is very important for shooting this kind of scenery theme. If you shoot the sunrise and sunset in the right place, you are half successful!
2. When will you take the shot?
Sunrise and sunset have strong timeliness, and their performances are different in different seasons and different time periods, which requires us to attach great importance to the choice of shooting time between shooting.
As far as seasons are concerned, the best seasons for shooting sunrises and sunsets are spring and autumn. In summer, these two seasons are later than sunrise and earlier than sunset, which is conducive to shooting, and there are many clouds, which makes it easier to encounter the scene of "colorful clouds all over the sky".
The specific time is determined by the author's intention, the choice of place, the local sunrise and sunset schedule and the season at that time. Before shooting, you can pay attention to the time when the sun sets in the west. If possible, you can ask the local meteorological department for a sunrise and sunset schedule.
If it's convenient, go to the place where you chose the site several times, so that you can better understand the shooting time. In addition, before leaving, pay more attention to the weather forecast of the day!
Specific shooting articles:
1. When should I press the shutter?
The time of sunrise or sunset is very short. In this short time, the scenery may change greatly every minute. Take sunset as an example. Sunset also has several processes, which can be divided into four, that is, the sun turns yellow, red, egg-shaped, then disappears in the horizontal line, and finally the sky turns from red to purple, and then becomes deep blue.
During this period, the light changed greatly, from hot sunshine to dark blue, and the foreground, such as the light of the city, also lit up, which seemed to be a long time. However, the sun disappears at the mountain line or the horizontal line really quickly, and it may sink just two minutes after hitting the mountain line, so it is natural to be careless.
When the sun goes down, the wonderful colors have just begun, or after the sun goes down for more than ten minutes, there is nothing and the sky is getting darker and darker. Many times, I see my colleagues start to pack up their equipment and go home, but in fact, there is still more than half an hour of good weather after sunset. If you shoot in a city, the lights in the city will become the best theme, and many perfect sunset photos will be completed at that time, because the light difference has narrowed, and the prospects of buildings or villages are still hierarchical.
2. Cloud shooting
Cloud is a natural reflective object in shooting, which can spread the red light of the sun, thus constantly changing works.
When shooting, pay special attention to what happens when clouds cover the sunset. At this time, the sun's rays will come out from behind the clouds, forming a large scene of radioactive rays, thus adding a very touching effect to the photos.
Because of the changeable clouds, photographers are required to pay attention to observation when shooting and seize the opportunity to press the shutter. When shooting with clouds as the main body, generally speaking, we should aim the metering point at the clouds to measure the light, but at the same time, we should be careful not to expose ourselves to the sun.
3. Prospect application
It is also common to shoot the sunrise and sunset without clouds in the sky. In order to avoid the sky being too monotonous, using some surrounding foreground as a foil, such as sparse leaves and branches as the foreground of the empty sky, can help balance the structure of the scene.
But if the foreground is too much or too heavy, it will cover most of the sky and affect the balance of the picture. However, it is also a good method to take the foreground as the main body and the sunset/sunrise scenery behind it as the background.
If you want to use the foreground to represent the sunset or sunrise in the sky, the foreground is often regarded as a silhouette effect, and the acquisition of silhouette effect photos makes full use of the light difference between the subject and the background. Generally speaking, the backlight at sunrise and sunset is easy to show the effect of silhouette, because the light is the softest at this time. Choosing the position and angle in advance, waiting for the sun to rise from the horizon, or set on the horizon, from red to orange, or from orange to red, is the best time to shoot.
At this time, the exposure should follow the principle of underexposure rather than overexposure, and the exposure should be measured according to the background. Only in this way can the subject be seriously underexposed and form a strong silhouette.
First, the camera's metering mode should be "spot metering", and then the metering point should be selected in a brighter sky for metering. If the camera in your hand has AELock function, press the AELock key of the camera to lock the exposure value (for cameras without AE exposure lock function, you can press the door key to lock); Finally, re-adjust the composition and shoot with the exposure combination just now, so that you can shoot a perfect silhouette effect.
Step 4 reflect
Many excellent photos of sunrise and sunset are taken by the water, because at sunrise or sunset, the sparkling water reflects beautiful rosy clouds, and the sails on the water add a little vividness to the picture, which is really a good photographic subject. Shooting the reflection of the water surface will add a lot of color to the photos of sunrise and sunset, and a calm sea surface or lake can reflect the scenery in the sky.
It presents a mirror-like image, which is always disturbed by the breeze blowing over the water. Leave more dazzling light on the water, and draw a light path from the horizon to the foreground of the picture. When the sun goes down, this light path will extend to your eyes.
Therefore, the first thing to pay attention to when shooting at the water's edge is the composition factor. Has the horizontal line been set before pressing the shutter? Have I included all the scenery I need? These are all noteworthy issues. When metering, the average metering mode is generally selected, so that the light distribution of the whole picture can be uniform without overexposure or underexposure.
5. Close-up shot
No one stipulates that there must be clouds when shooting sunrise and sunset, and there is not necessarily a prospect. A simple and pure sunset or sunrise is also cute enough to enter our lens. If your camera has a telephoto lens, lengthen it so that a simple sunset or sunrise becomes the absolute subject of the picture!
In fact, such pictures are also very colorful. Sunset or sunrise shows a color transition from red to yellow when approaching the ground, and the surrounding sky also shows a transition from yellow to red and from bright to dark. How can such a picture be missed?
So when shooting, don't stick to the previous shooting experience, give full play to your personal creativity, maybe there will be unexpected gains!
6. The sun went down.
Shooting is about to start, and the sun has sunk behind the distant mountain. Shouldn't we cover the camera, too?
Don't be busy yet Just because the sun can't appear in the picture doesn't mean that our shooting work is coming to an end. Sometimes when the sun sets in the west, beautiful burning clouds begin to appear. This is because when the sun is below the horizon, the effect of clouds reflecting sunlight is more obvious. At this time, the light is often dim, and the shutter of the camera often drops to the point where it can't be photographed by hand.
At this time, the tripod we have worked so hard to learn can come in handy. When shooting a big scene, aim at the flaming clouds, or use a wide-angle lens (or pull the focal length of the camera to the widest angle) and use average metering to get good results. Of course, manual exposure will get more results. At this time, we need to test a few more combinations of aperture and shutter. Generally speaking, using a small aperture when shooting scenery can make the picture more thorough. So, when the gorgeous red clouds all over the sky make the whole sky appear in various colors, is it too wasteful to cover the lens?
TIPS 1: shooting skills of sunset and sunrise
1, use a small aperture to prevent overexposure caused by insufficient shutter speed. Of course, small aperture shooting is also a common means of scenery photos;
2. Normal metering of1-1.5ev and increasing exposure compensation can generally achieve ideal results;
3. Spot metering can also be carried out after sunset, and the exposure compensation is increased by about 1EV;
4. In order to prevent lens glare, try to use a hood and remove unnecessary' filters';
5, if it is a fool camera, there is generally a special "sunset mode", which can be used to shoot.
6, pay attention to protect your eyes, especially when shooting with a telephoto lens, avoid facing the sun.
7. Use average photometry, then increase or decrease the EV value as needed, and consider the surrounding exposure;
8, magenta filter can deepen the purple tone of the sky, of course, in the digital age, this can be achieved in post-processing;
9. When encountering fast moving clouds, you can use a smaller aperture and a longer exposure time to reflect the sense of movement.
10, try to use a tripod to ensure that the picture is stable enough.
These are some basic rules for sunrise and sunset shooting! As for the composition and so on, we need to make corresponding changes according to different situations, so it is difficult to put it in a word and we can only explore it by ourselves.
Backlight shooting skill
First, understand the angle of light.
The angle of light is also important. For example, the midday sun can be used as a backlight. However, due to the high angle of the light source, the effect produced at this time is closer to the top light, and the intensity of the backlight is relatively small. When the sun approaches the horizon in the morning or evening, the objects on the ground are basically completely illuminated by the backlight, so the effect is more prominent and intense. In the same way, winter is more suitable for taking backlight photos than summer, because the position of the sun arc is very low in winter, and the effect of backlight is better.
Second, understand the lighting conditions.
Looking at the scene from the perspective of backlight may make people feel difficult to control. There are indeed a few problems that need special attention, but once you master backlight shooting, you will have a powerful means to make your photos different and make other photos taken in the light instantly eclipsed. Not all situations and all subjects are suitable for backlighting, so we need to be cautious about any experimental creation. Learning to accurately understand the lighting conditions and choosing the right person for backlight is the key to the success of backlight. Theoretically, any form of light can be used as backlight, but the stronger the light, the better the backlight effect.
Third, the theme of characters that backlight can create.
Portrait subjects suitable for shooting from the perspective of backlight are very rich: fresh people, wedding photos, documentary humanities, creative portraits and so on. If you want to show a person's hair, outline and special aesthetic effect, backlighting is a powerful means of expression. Therefore, people with blond hair and graceful figure are very suitable for backlighting, because it can emphasize the details of the subject outline. Backlit people will also form long shadows in the direction towards the camera, thus providing extra points of interest for the picture.
Fourth, exposure and photometry methods.
Even if the subject and light form are not mentioned, there is only one thing that can determine the success or failure of backlit photos: exposure. As long as you master the correct exposure, you can almost completely control the backlight. The important thing is that you need to eliminate the influence of background, so that the subject can be exposed correctly. For most subjects, it is not wrong to choose a metering mode according to the overall situation of the picture, such as evaluation metering or matrix metering. However, if you still choose this metering mode when shooting against the light, it is almost doomed to failure, because the light from the background will seriously mislead the metering system, making the subject seriously overexposed and even become a silhouette. To avoid this problem, you need to switch to spot metering or area metering mode, so that you can only measure the area of the subject more accurately. In this metering mode, the background light will not affect the camera's judgment, and the subject can get the correct exposure.
Select spot metering mode to directly meter the object. This metering method can ensure that your subject is exposed correctly. If your SLR camera does not provide spot metering mode, you can also use the following methods: shorten the distance or lengthen the focal length, let the subject occupy the whole field of vision, shoot in manual mode, and then re-compose.
