Jiangxia bid farewell to Song Dynasty

Tang Libai

The water in Chuzhou is crystal clear, as if it were empty, as straight as the distant sea.

You and I will be thousands of miles apart, but there is this cup of wine in front of us.

The valley bird keeps crying when it is sunny, and the river ape is sad at night.

I have never shed tears in my life, but now I do.

Translation:

Chu's water is crystal clear, as if it were empty and directly connected with the distant sea. You and I will be far apart, but our interests are in the same glass of wine. When the sun is shining, the birds in the valley are still singing, but at night, the apes on the river bank will cry. I have never cried in my life, but now I can't stop crying.

Jiang Xia Farewell to Song Dynasty is the work of Li Bai, a great poet in Tang Dynasty. This poem was written by Li Bai who left Jiangxia (now Wuchang, Hubei) and Song Zhiti who was exiled to Jiaodi (now Hanoi, Vietnam) in the 20th year of Kaiyuan (734). The first couplet says that the river in front of us is connected with the blue sea, implying Song Zhi's relegation.

Couplets are written about people thousands of miles away, but friendship is in a glass of wine in front of them; The period on the neckline indicates the sunny weather when saying goodbye, and the next sentence is the howl of an ape in the night wind; Tail couplets show deep affection for friends. This poem has a sad mood and deeply expresses the author's sympathy for the Song Dynasty.
