What should I do if I encounter a hail attack?

If you are hit by hail, you should look for shelter quickly.

If you suddenly encounter a hail attack, you must quickly enter the room or take shelter under a solid bunker. If there is no suitable shelter nearby, squat with your back to the wind and put your head in your hands to protect your head, chest and abdomen from attack. If you carry a bag or folder with you, you can temporarily wear it on your head to minimize the damage.

When avoiding, observe whether there are dangerous goods that are easy to fall around. If so, move the position immediately to avoid being hit. At the same time, stay away from glass products such as windows. Stay away from lighting lines, high-voltage lines and transformers to avoid serious consequences of electric shock.

Formation principle of hail

Hail is a kind of solid precipitation, which falls because ice crystals or raindrops roll and condense several times in convective cumulonimbus clouds. It is usually produced in the process of hail front activity or tropical cyclone landing, but it is also local.

Hail usually happens at the turn of spring and summer. To produce a hailstorm of 10 cm, there must be an updraft movement of more than 50 m/s (generally, the updraft movement of cumulonimbus clouds that produce thunderstorms is only about 10 m/s). Such a strong upward movement is entirely obtained by the release of unstable energy in the atmosphere. Therefore, a necessary condition for hail suppression is the existence of extremely unstable atmosphere in the air. The thicker the unstable layer, the better the hail suppression.
