General situation of Central Meteorological Observatory

The Central Meteorological Observatory is the center of national weather forecast, climate prediction, climate change research and meteorological information collection and release services. It is also the Asia Regional Meteorological Center and the Nuclear Pollution Diffusion Emergency Response Center of the World Meteorological Organization, which was established in 1 March 19501. Over the past decades, the Central Meteorological Observatory (National Meteorological Center) has made great progress in various undertakings. The meteorological services of the Central Meteorological Observatory (National Meteorological Center) include providing decision-making meteorological services for the Party Central Committee, the State Council and relevant government departments to formulate meteorological information needed to guide national economic development and organize and direct scientific decision-making on disaster prevention and mitigation, providing public welfare meteorological services through television, radio, newspapers, websites and other media, providing professional meteorological services needed for national key projects, enterprises and institutions to seek advantages and avoid disadvantages, and providing guiding meteorological services for provincial meteorological departments across the country. The meteorological services of the National Meteorological Center have covered agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, transportation, energy, water conservancy, ocean, environmental protection, insurance and commerce.

In order to meet the growing demand in different fields of society, the National Meteorological Center relies on scientific and technological progress and actively cooperates with scientific research and education institutions at home and abroad to improve the forecasting level of typhoon, rainstorm, severe convective weather, drought, sandstorm and atmospheric environmental quality in China. We will also strengthen research and development in the fields of weather, environment, applied meteorology, remote sensing application and information technology application, and constantly expand our business fields.
