Gas is one of the four basic states of matter.

It can be composed of a single atom, a simple molecule composed of one element, a composite molecule composed of many elements, etc. Gas can flow, deform and diffuse, and its volume is not limited or fixed. Atoms or molecules of gaseous substances can move freely with each other.

Common elemental gas

Simple substance refers to a pure substance composed of one element. Common elemental gases are nitrogen, oxygen, ozone, chlorine and rare gases, which are explained separately.

1. Nitrogen: The chemical formula of nitrogen is N2, which is a colorless and odorless gas and almost insoluble in water. Chemical properties are stable, and ordinary substances cannot burn in nitrogen. The density is close to air, accounting for about 78% in the air. At atmospheric pressure, the temperature of liquid nitrogen is-196℃, which can be used to preserve precision instruments. Liquid nitrogen itself is colorless and tasteless, but it turns yellow when it comes into contact with human skin.

2. Oxygen: The chemical formula of oxygen is O2, which is a colorless and odorless gas and slightly soluble in water. Active in chemical properties, it can be used as an oxidant to support combustion, and some substances that cannot be burned in air will be rekindled when put into pure oxygen. The density is slightly higher than that of air, accounting for about 2 1% in air. At atmospheric pressure, the temperature of liquid oxygen is-183℃, which is light blue and can be used as an accelerant for rocket fuel.

3. Ozone: The chemical formula of ozone is O3, which is a light blue gas with a special smell and slightly soluble in water. Its chemical properties are very active, its oxidation is stronger than oxygen, and its combustion-supporting effect is stronger as an oxidant. The density is higher than that of air, and the ozone in nature mainly exists in the stratospheric ozone layer.

Ozone in the ozone layer can absorb the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, which can protect the life on the ground, but excessive ozone inhalation can cause dizziness, chest tightness and other symptoms.

4. Chlorine: The chemical formula of chlorine is Cl2, which is a yellow-green gas with a strong pungent smell and can be dissolved in water. It is very toxic, which can invade respiratory mucosa and cause edema, and can be fatal in severe cases. Its density is higher than that of air and its chemical properties are more active. It can be used as an accelerant, and many substances such as hydrogen and magnesium can burn in chlorine.
