Why does it often thunder and rain in Beijing?

According to the latest statistics from the Climate Center of Beijing Meteorological Bureau, since the beginning of summer, the precipitation in Beijing Plain has been 207.0mm, 70% more than normal, and 90% more than last year, which is the highest in the same period of last decade.

The relevant person in charge of the Climate Center of Beijing Meteorological Bureau told the reporter that since June 1, the weather and climate in Beijing has been characterized by excessive precipitation, low temperature and thunderstorms and strong winds. There are also local heavy rains in the afternoon to night on June 13 and June 16. Due to the heavy rainfall intensity, a few low-lying sections were flooded, which once "added chaos" to urban traffic.

In response to the recent thunderstorm weather, the Beijing Meteorological Observatory timely issued a yellow warning signal for lightning and a blue warning signal for rainstorm, warning that there will be short-term rainstorm and local hail in some areas within three hours, reminding flood control departments and citizens to take precautions against short-term thunderstorm and gale hazards.

Why are thunderstorms frequent?

Many citizens want to know why there are frequent thunderstorms in Beijing recently.

Meteorologists explained that this was caused by the low-pressure weather situation in Mongolia under the background of recent atmospheric circulation. In late June, there was a small cold air over Mongolia heading south, which interacted with the southerly warm and humid airflow from south to north in Beijing. Coupled with the dynamic and thermal effects of Beijing's urban heat island effect, it often causes strong convective weather in Beijing and surrounding provinces and cities. Recently, there have been thunderstorms in Beijing in the afternoon or evening or even at night, which is influenced by this Mongolian cold vortex.

If Beijing is affected by the vortex weather system in summer, it has the characteristics of heavy rainfall, uneven rainfall, lightning, strong wind, hail and other weather phenomena. However, the vortex weather system has also brought sufficient precipitation to Beijing, which can supplement Beijing's surface and groundwater, alleviate the hot and humid weather, and is also very beneficial to purify the urban air.
