Qinghai is not hot in summer, at least not as hot as the mainland. So Xining is called "the summer capital of China".

Qinghai Province is located in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which belongs to the continental climate of the plateau. It has the characteristics of low average temperature, large temperature difference between day and night, less and concentrated rainfall, long sunshine and strong solar radiation. Winter is cold and long, and summer is cool and short. There are obvious differences in climate in different regions. The average annual temperature in the eastern Huangshui Valley (where Xining is located) is 2 ~ 9℃, the average summer temperature is 17- 19℃, the maximum temperature in July is less than 20℃, and the maximum daily temperature reaches or exceeds 30℃ in less than a week, so it is a pleasant summer resort. Moreover, the rain and heat are in the same season, and the precipitation is mainly concentrated in June-September.

The annual average temperature in Qaidam basin is 2 ~ 5℃, and the precipitation and summer temperature are lower than those in Huangshui basin where Xining is located. The northeast mountainous area (Qilian Mountain) and Qingnan Plateau have the lowest temperature, and there is no absolute frost-free period.
