Where was the capital of Zhao during the Warring States Period?

1. During the Warring States Period, the capital of Zhao was in Jinyang (now Taiyuan, Shanxi), then moved to Zhongmou (now Hebi) and then moved to Handan (now Handan, Hebei). In the later dynasty, Xing was designated as the capital of Xin (Xingtai).

2. Jinyang, the first capital of Zhao, is located in the southwest of Taiyuan and the northern end of Taiyuan Basin, with superior agricultural conditions. In 425 BC, after the death of Zhao Xiangzi, Zhao Huan, the son of his brother, was transferred to Zhao Xianzi, and Zhao Jia, the son of Zhao Xianzi, expelled him and moved the capital to Zhongmou. After the death of Zhao Hengzi in 424 BC, the people of China welcomed Zhao Xianzi back and still took Zhongmou as its capital.

3. Zhongmou, now located in the western mountainous area of Hebi City, Henan Province, has been the capital of Zhao for less than 40 years, with short time and little influence. Many people don't know that Hebi, Henan used to be the capital of Zhao, but during Zhongmou's tenure as the capital of Zhao, Zhao was officially recognized by the Zhou royal family and became a vassal. In 403 BC, King Weilie of Zhou made Zhao Liehou a vassal, and Zhao was formally established.

The direct cause of Zhao's move from Zhongmou to Handan may be civil strife. In 387 BC, Zhao ascended the throne. In the first 386 years, Zhao Gongzi, the son of Zhao Wugong, rose up and moved his capital to Handan. Of course, the deeper reason may be that Zhongmou was too remote from the territory of Zhao at that time and too close to the border of Qi and Wei. It became the capital of Zhao in 386 BC and was destroyed by Qin in 222 BC. Handan was the capital of Zhao for a century and a half. During the period when the capital of Zhao was Handan, after the military reforms of Zhao Wuling, Wang and Qi She, Zhao grew into a powerful country that could compete with it, and Handan also became the political, economic and cultural center of northern China at that time.

5. Zhao also established another capital, Xindu, during the Zhao Chenghou period (the first 355 years), which is located in Xingtai City today. Xindu is an important city of Zhao. In the battle of Zhao and Wei, Handan fell, and Zhao held on to Xindu for three years and recovered Handan. At the end of Qin dynasty, after the restoration of Zhao, the new capital was the capital.
