Fun places in Dunhuang

Mogao Grottoes

The Mogao Grottoes, commonly known as the Thousand Buddha Cave, is considered as the most valuable cultural discovery in the 20th century. Dunhuang is located at the western end of Hexi Corridor. Founded in the pre-Qin period, after the construction of sixteen countries, Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Xixia and Yuan Dynasties, it has formed a huge scale, with 735 grottoes, 45,000 square meters of murals and 24 15 clay sculptures, making it the largest and best-preserved treasure house of Buddhist art in the world.

Mogao Grottoes is an art hall integrating ancient buildings, sculptures and murals, especially colorful murals. Located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, it was dug on the cliff at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain. The length from north to south is about 1.600 meters, and it is arranged in five layers from top to bottom. The height is strewn at random, row upon row, shaped like a honeycomb pigeon house, spectacular and unusual. Together with Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui, it is called "Four Grottoes in China".

Ya Dan Geopark

At a distance of 0/85 km from Dunhuang/Kloc-0 and 5km from Yumen, there is a wind erosion landform community, commonly known as ghost town, with China Geopark. On a dry river bed with a length of 25 kilometers from east to west and a width of 1-2 kilometers from north to south, Ya Dan is densely covered with hills and peaks with different shapes, which are rare in the world, both individually and as a whole.

On the flat river bed, mounds and peaks stand abruptly, just like buildings, which are patchwork, some like buildings, some like churches, some like mosques and some like yurts; Even the Tiantan in Beijing, the Potala Palace in Tibet, the pyramids in Egypt and the Sphinx can be found here. The lion in the desert, the camel team on the Silk Road, the sea of turtles, the mainstay ... these sculptures are lifelike. Being in it is like entering the exhibition hall of architectural art, which makes people dizzying.

Sanweishan

Sanwei Mountain is a famous mountain in Dunhuang history and the birthplace of Dunhuang civilization history.

Sanwei Mountain, also known as Beiyu Mountain, is named Sanwei Mountain because its main peak is opposite to the Mogao Grottoes and there are three dangerous peaks. Before the Qin Dynasty, the eminent monks were overjoyed to see the three dangerous mountains like a thousand buddhas, and began to dig the Mogao Grottoes. The three dangers of Buddha's light are the motive of digging the Mogao grottoes, and it can also be said that it is the cradle of the Mogao grottoes. Sanwei Mountain is the first holy place in Dunhuang, and it is listed as the first of the eight scenic spots in Dunhuang in local chronicles.

Sanwei Mountain is the first holy place in Dunhuang, and it is listed as the first of the eight scenic spots in Dunhuang in local chronicles. Sanwei Mountain and Mogao Grottoes are adjacent to each other across the Daquan River. Mogao Grottoes were built by the Buddha's light of Sanwei Mountain. It can be seen that the Buddha's light of Sanwei Mountain is the driving force for digging the Mogao Grottoes. It can also be said that Sanwei Mountain is the cradle of the Mogao Grottoes, so there are eight scenic spots and two thousand Buddha's rocks in Dunhuang. In this way, the three-dimensional mountain and the Mogao grottoes are inseparable like brothers.
