History of Eland Road Stadium
Eland Road Stadium is located at the foot of beeston Mountain, adjacent to A643 Highway and Ehrlander Town. The construction land of the stadium was originally owned by the Bentley family's Brewery. Originally known as the Old Peacock Land, the name of "Peacock Corps" was associated with Leeds City and later Leeds United because it was opposite the bar of the same name. The first owner of the stadium was the holbeck Football Club. After buying the old peacock land from the Bentley family for 11 pounds, the club moved here from holbeck amusement park. The club built a stand and the infield of the stadium here, which was later known as Elam Road.
In the 192-3 season, Leeds local football clubs Leeds Woodville and holbeck * * * used this venue. However, holbeck, who lost to St. Helen in the play-off in 194, immediately began to decline and the stadium was put up for sale. In August, a meeting was held at Griffin Hotel in Wild Boar Lane. After the meeting, Leeds City Football Club was formally established, and Elam Road was rented by the team for the home game of the new season. On October 13, 194, the two parties signed a formal lease contract, and the rent reached 75 pounds per year. In March 195, the club could choose to buy out the ownership of the stadium at a price of 5, pounds. But in November, the price was lowered to 45.
After Leeds City finished its first season in the English League, the club spent 1,5 pounds to build a 5,-seat stand on the west side of the stadium. The attendance of the stadium has gradually increased. On December 3th, the match against Bradford, also in West Yorkshire, attracted 22,5 spectators, bringing the club 487 pounds. The expansion of the stadium is still going on. In order to ensure the safety of the stadium, the club hired the "Stadium Committee" to supervise the construction process. In February 196, 3,961 square yards of land on the side of Chevelle and Gjerde Road was bought by "Monk Bridge Smelting Iron" for 42 pounds. The Committee immediately arranged for the construction of a grandstand with a capacity of 4, spectators, which is scheduled to be completed before the Chelsea game in November. The plan cost 3, pounds and half a mile of steel. The construction plan also includes a runway, dressing room, office and garage across the stadium for training. In order to prevent water accumulation in the stadium, the installation of drainage system is also included in the agenda.
Leeds City subsequently suffered an economic crisis and even endangered the normal operation of the club. Despite a series of uncertainties, the owner of the venue received a payment of 1 pounds and an annual rent of 25 dollars. During World War I, the stadium was requisitioned by the military for military trials and shooting training. In the 1919-2 season, the English League was once again opened, and Leeds City went all the way higher and higher, but then the scandal that the team illegally paid the players income during the war was exposed, and the team was removed from the professional league after only participating in eight leagues. Subsequently, some local enterprises began to consider digging on the spot in Elam Road, and using the sediments under the land to open a brick burning factory on the original site. However, Yorkshire Amateur Football Club became the owner of the stadium, and the team played on the stadium to prevent the stadium from being destroyed. In the 192s, the South Stand was covered by a wooden bucket roof, which was called "Scratching Shed" by the local people. The stands built on the east side are called "The Lowfields". The grandstand behind the north goal is called "Spinkop", named after the Spinkop Mountain, which killed 322 British soldiers during the Boer War.
from 193s to 194s, the overall structure of Eland Road Stadium did not change much, during which the stadium ushered in many peak attendance rates. On December 27th, 1932, 56,795 spectators swarmed in to watch the match between the team and then champion Arsenal, a record that has been maintained for nearly 35 years. In the final game of the league, Leeds United's match against Middlesbrough only attracted 96 spectators. In 1938, the final of the rugby championship was held in Elland Road, with Leeds playing Henslet. 54,112 spectators witnessed Henslet winning the championship. During World War II, the stadium was requisitioned by the "War Committee" again.
On November 9th, 1953, the floodlight with a value of 7, pounds was first used in the stadium. Leeds United played against the Irish at home, which was also the most expensive stadium lighting equipment in Britain at that time. The match attracted 31,5 fans to witness john charles and player and coach Reggie Carter score two goals each to help the team beat Scottish opponents 4-1. In the following weeks, teams from northern Scotland visited one after another, including Dundee and Falcock.
on September 18th, 1956, a fire broke out in the west stand, and the stadium was burned in a large area. The main structure of the stadium was severely damaged, including the office, team equipment, exhibition hall, physiotherapy equipment, dressing room, office of the board of directors, media studio and power supply system, and the roof of the west stand collapsed in a large area. The fire caused losses as high as 1, pounds. The amount of insurance purchased by the team is not enough to fill this loophole. Players are involved in the action of cleaning up the debris and wreckage at the scene. This stand, which can hold 25 stands, can no longer be put into use. The board of directors held a meeting for this purpose and finally decided to publicly raise funds from the society and turn to Leeds City Council for help to build a brand-new stand. The budget has risen from the initial 6, to 18,. The west stand will be reopened to the public before the start of the league next year.
the brand-new west stand has 4, seats installed at the back of the stadium, including 6, standing seats. Two years later, after the game against Preston in the Central League, the west stand was threatened by fire again. Fortunately, Creaer Williamson, the general secretary of the club, and some board members were present to control the fire in time, and the stadium did not receive any substantial damage.
In the 196s, Elland Road witnessed Don Revie leading his team back to League One. The team remained in the top 4 in the standings for the next 1 years. On March 2, 1965, the video of Leeds United's 4-1 victory over Everton on Elland Road first appeared on TV. Leeds United in Levi's era also set a new record for the number of spectators at the stadium-the replay against Sunderland in the fifth round of the FA Cup in 1967 attracted 57,892 fans to watch the game. In April 1968, the club spent 25, pounds to demolish the Spinkop stand and build a brand-new stand. In less than 6 weeks, the main structure of the grandstand ceiling was built. Later, this stand became known as the Gjerde Stand. The new grandstand pushed the distance of about 18 meters to the back of the goal. The open space was replanted with turf and the length of the stadium was extended to the north by 9.1 meters.
in p>197, the stadium was further renovated. The team spent .2 million/2 thousand pounds to build the northwest corner stand at the corner connecting the west stand and the popular science stand. Since then, the team has added a stand in the other corner of the lowland stand and the popular science stand at a cost of 2, pounds. In 1972, the team's sports and official souvenir shop officially opened. In 1974, Leeds United won the league championship for the second time. The "scratched shed" was demolished and the team spent 5, pounds to build a brand-new south stand on the original site. These include an independent platform that can accommodate 4, people, a row of 16 groups of executive boxes and a full-seat stand that can accommodate 3,5 people. The budget for connecting the South Stand and the Lowland Stand was cut due to lack of funds. In the same year, the floodlight was also replaced by a brand-new high-foot floodlight. The brand-new lighting equipment with a height of 79 meters also set a European record at that time. Three floodlight cups were erected on both sides of the popular science stand and the northwest stand respectively. Four years later, the last floodlight was set up on the stadium. On May 19th, 1982, the first live broadcast game on Eland Road was the replay of the Rugby League Challenge final between Hull and Videnis. In the summer of the same year, Leeds United sold the stadium to Leeds City Council for 2.5 million pounds. Parliament granted the team a 125-year lease. Then a huge plan to renovate the stadium was put forward in 1987. These include spending 5 million pounds and 75 million pounds to rebuild the lowland stand into a full-seating stand that can accommodate 7,5 people and building a small stadium around the stadium that can accommodate 2, people. Other plans include building a shopping center, skating rink, cricket hall, cinema, nightclub, cafe, restaurant, press conference center and shop. This plan has never been put into practice.
in September, 1991, the southeast corner stand connecting the south stand and the lowland stand was officially opened to the public, and this stand was also prepared for visiting fans. The family grandstand, which can only accommodate 1,71 fans, had to be moved to the East grandstand due to the excessive number of club members. This new stand is nicknamed "cheese wedge" by fans because of its bright yellow color. In April, 1992, a batch of banquet equipment was introduced into the conference center located behind the west stand. In 1992, Elan Road began a new round of renovation. The new East Stand completely replaced the original Low Stand. * * * 17, seats on two floors ensure that the fans' sight will not be blocked. In 1993, the renovation was officially completed, costing 5.5 million pounds, including 25 executive boxes and 1, new seats on the ground floor, some of which constitute a brand-new family stand that can only be seated by club members. In addition, 7 seats have been added to the upper floor. The East Stand became the largest cantilever stand in the world at that time. After the publication of the Taylor Report, the steps of the popular science stand were replaced by 7, seats, and in 994, Elland Road officially became a full-seating stadium. In October, George La Seles, then president of the club, and Mrs. Levi, Levi's widow, unveiled the new popular science stand. Gjerde Stand was named Don Revie Stand to commemorate this meritorious coach.
In December, 1997, a plan to renovate the West Stand and South Stand with an investment of 11.3 million pounds was implemented. After completion, the stadium will have a capacity of 45, people. The renovation plan adopted a new structure of the East Stand which can accommodate 12, people. In addition, an indoor gymnasium with a capacity of 15, people will be built at the back of the west stand. This gymnasium will host basketball, ice hockey, concerts and other events and activities. Although the formation of an ice hockey team named Leeds Laser has been planned, the construction plan of this stadium as the home of the team has been put on hold for the time being. In 1998, Leeds United Club became the owner of Elland Road again. The newly formed "Leeds Sports" redeemed the stadium from Leeds City Council for 1 million pounds. On August 16th, 21, Peter Redesdale, then the president of the team, wrote an open letter to the season ticket holders and shareholders of the team, expounding the future plans of the club to renovate Elam Road and possibly relocate the team's home. A vote will decide the fate of the stadium, but the club is more inclined to move the home. Only 13% of the 18,5 participants supported keeping the club on Elland Road. The remaining 87% tend to relocate. On September 7th, 21, Redesdale announced the plan to move the club into a new stadium in skelton with a capacity of 5, fans before July 211. This plan will be implemented in the 24-5 season. In March 23, due to Redesdale's dismissal, the plan was finally aborted. At that time, the team's financial situation was very chaotic, and it may even be held in financial custody in March 24.
A few years later, Eland Road was sold to Jack Peche by the club under a contract with a 25-year lease and repurchase by installment. On December 27th, 26, it was revealed that the stadium was sold to a timber trading company registered in the British Virgin Islands 15 months ago.
In the summer of p>26, the South Stand was renovated and closed to the public in several games after the league started. The renovation includes the modernization of boxes, dining center, middle-level office area, management office equipment and the construction of a restaurant named after legendary Leeds United star Billy Bremner-Billy Bar.
Before the game against Huddersfield on December 8, 27, a new stadium renovation plan was made public, mainly building hotels, shopping centers and health clubs around Elland Road. A new hotel will be built on one side of the stadium store. Possible related plans include a gymnasium, casino, police command center, coffee shop and a new parking lot with a parking space of 27. On October 27th, 28, the plan was further expanded. The club planned to build a 35-room hotel, an entertainment city integrating shopping, bars and catering, further upgrade and increase the equipment of the business center, and a supermarket, office building and nightclub at the back of the East Stand. On November 6, 28, Leeds City Council announced that it would not locate the Leeds Theatre, which was built by the Council, near the stadium.
On December 16th, 29, the candidate cities and stadiums for England to bid for the 218 World Cup were announced. This includes Leeds and its Elland Road Stadium. Therefore, a plan to renovate the stands in john charles and Don Revie is put on the agenda, and the stadium will be further expanded to 5, seats.
On December 28th, 29, President Ken Bates announced the plan to add 2, to 3, seats in the South Stand. The planned executive box will be removed and seats will be installed on the original site.
In March p>211, the upper end of the East Stand was renovated, and a central hall and 2 executive boxes were expanded. A playground, hotel and supermarket will be built around the stadium in five steps.
