What should a pet store employee do if he is caught by a dog?
First of all, you will get the disease only if you are bitten and scratched by a dog that is in the stage of rabies. Even if your dog has the virus latent, it does not seem to be sick there, and its saliva does not carry the virus. Second, if you are scratched or bitten by a sick dog, there is a 30-70 chance of getting sick. Even if you register for a vaccine afterwards, there are still 0.15 (this data needs to be confirmed) people who will get sick. Third, there is a possibility of death from the vaccine itself, but the rate is relatively low. Fourth, the World Health Organization records that the longest incubation period of rabies is six years, with only one case. As for the 19-year-old case in China, who is skeptical about this and believes that it may be a misdiagnosis or secondary infection. After all, who can guarantee the 19-year case? Have not been scratched or bitten by dogs, cats or other animals (dogs are not the only ones who may be infected with this disease)
Treatment after contact
After suspected contact with animals, you should follow the WHO recommends debridement and vaccination as soon as possible, which can almost 100% prevent the occurrence of rabies after contact with sick dogs. Treatment recommendations to prevent rabies depend on the category of exposure:
Category I: touching or feeding the suspected animal, but the skin is intact
Category II: minor scratching after contact, but no bleeding , or licking of broken skin areas
Category III: one or more bites, scratches, licking of broken skin areas, or other contact causing skin damage; or contact with bats
Post-exposure care to prevent rabies includes cleaning and disinfecting the wound or point of contact, followed by administration of rabies vaccine as soon as possible. Rabies vaccine is used for exposure categories II and III. Antirabies immune globulin or antibodies should be used in category III contacts or in people with weakened immune systems.
When humans come into contact with a suspected animal, immediate steps should be taken to identify, capture, or mercifully kill the animal. Treatment after exposure should be started immediately and should be stopped only if the animal is a dog or cat and is still healthy after 10 days. Animals that have been killed or have died should be tested for viruses, and the test results should be sent to relevant veterinary services and public health officials so that the local situation can be better documented.
