Year: Collection of Shang Dynasty in Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

According to historical records, Yin Qi is a descendant of the Phoenix, while the Shang Dynasty was dominated by men. This jade phoenix is smooth and charming. Looking back sideways, it was Wu Ding, the Queen of Shang Dynasty, who had a good wife. Many jade dragons were unearthed from Fu Hao's tomb in Yin Ruins, but only one jade phoenix was found.

Perhaps Fu Hao was the most famous woman at that time. Among the more than 10,000 pieces of Oracle bones unearthed from Yin Ruins in Anyang, there are more than 200 references to her, including her battle, childbirth, illness, and even asking how she was after her death.

The funerary objects in the tomb are very rich, including 755 jade articles, 499 bone fragments, bronze mirrors, ancient combs and exquisite ivory cups. Bone carving knives, turquoise, malachite, agate beads and other precious stones. There are many small and lovely stone tools.

We seem to see a woman who loves beauty and pays attention to the quality of life, just like Yufeng, graceful.

As Shang Zhouwang's favorite wife, it's probably not surprising to have these. Surprisingly, there are a number of funerary objects in Fu Hao's tomb, which are not available to the queens of past dynasties.

Hundreds of bronze weapons and a series of bronze ritual vessels, the most striking of which is this big cymbal symbolizing the military strength of the country, with the words "Fu Hao" engraved on it. This queen is not a weak woman living in the harem, but a woman who participates in state affairs, has a place in the patriarchal society and speaks with strength.

Fu Hao was good at fighting, often presided over various large-scale sacrifices, had his own fief, was economically independent, and paid tribute to the king of Shang Dynasty. Wuding was a diligent and enlightened monarch in the middle of Shang Dynasty, and his era was called Wuding Zhongxing.

Wu occupied the Central Plains and expanded its territory. It is no exaggeration to say that Fu Hao has laid half of the country. As a queen and a female general, she undertook the cause of the country with wisdom and strength and won the respect of everyone. She is as strong as bronze. In life, she gave birth to children for Wu Ding. As a wife and mother, she is as gentle as jade, loves armed forces and red makeup, and is a model of perfect women.

It is this kind of lover, confidant and comrade-in-arms. When Fu Hao died at the age of thirty-three, Wu Ding was heartbroken. She hid her near the palace where she worked, and built a big hall on the tomb for her mother to enjoy. So that they can remember and worship for themselves and future generations.

Later generations and other clans also buried many heavy objects for her, even using the currency at that time, more than 6,800 seashells.

Such rich funerary objects have left us an extremely rich cultural heritage. Coincidentally, Fu Hao's tomb is outside the tomb area, becoming the only imperial tomb of Shang Dynasty that can be completely preserved in Yin Ruins.

Rich words and relics make us lucky to know such a legendary woman more than 3,000 years ago, a kind-hearted jade phoenix, just like her beautiful charm, fixed on the historical landscape and admired by future generations.
