History of Barbizon

Barbizon is a village about 50 kilometers south of Paris. This place is proud of the birth of the Barbizon School of Painting. The painting school was active in the 1830s and 1840s, advocating the depiction of French rural landscapes with national characteristics. The outstanding ones include the poet landscape painter J.B.C. Corot, the scientific landscape painter The'odore Oousseau, and the peasant painter Millet (Jean Francois Millet). (Another theory in academic circles is that Corot was actually related to the Barbizon School, but was not a real member.) A hundred years ago, the painter Severin described Barbizon like this: "It is in Fontainebleau. In the forest. It's a beautiful place, and you'll see how beautiful it is when we sit under the tall oak trees, smoking our pipes and painting with lots of mineral colors." Barbizon, close by! Surrounded by the Fontainebleau Forest, around 1850, it was still a remote village with no church, post office, or school. However, its only two inns were filled with painters who came here to sketch. The charming scenery and simple folk customs attracted them. First, Rousseau moved here from Paris, and then a large number of painters such as Corot and Millet also came to live here. It almost became a "painter village". This is where the name "Barbizon School" in the history of painting began.

The Barbizon of the past

Today’s Barbizon is a world-famous art town. It still has the old street of less than 200 meters, and it still retains the charm of the past. traces. The "GANNE" inn where painters originally lived has now been turned into a municipal museum. From the mid to late 19th century, many young artists stayed in this hotel. They had no money to pay for room and board, so they painted on the walls and furniture to offset the cost. The content of the painting includes a hunting dog following the artist to sketch, and a scene of the artist carrying a painting folder. The most interesting one is a painting of various utensils and food in a cupboard. It is said that the artist ate all the food in the cupboard because he was hungry. I drew pictures on the outside of the cupboard, so realistically that I hid them from the owner for a while. On the first floor of the museum, there is also a shop selling various souvenirs. Many of the houses in Barbizon have now been turned into galleries, exhibiting paintings of various styles that are popular today. Many houses have stone tablets engraved on the outside indicating that a famous painter once lived here. Among them, the most complete one is Miller's former residence. In 1849, Miller took his wife and children to Barbizon and settled there. From then on, he lived a life isolated from the bustling city. Here, Miller's art entered a mature stage (1850s-1860s). He worked hard in the fields while painting, and peasant life became his most important subject matter. Most of the works depict quiet pastoral life, such as the oil paintings "The Sower", "The Gleaner", "The Evening Bell" and a large number of masterpieces were produced during this period. Miller used his brush to truly reflect the daily life and hard work of farmers. This new type of genre painting was so popular that he was called a "peasant painter." Miller's former residence is located in a simple small courtyard, and his true character as a "peasant painter" is naturally revealed. The small studio is divided into two rooms, inside and outside. There are many beautiful landscape paintings in it. I heard that these were painted by Miller's students. They imitated the painting style of their mentor and have now formed a sect. At the end of Barbizon Street is a dense cedar forest, which was once a place where young artists sketched and chatted. The heads of Millet and Rousseau are engraved on a large stone to represent their friendship. Evergreen.

Barbizon School

French 19th century landscape school. Barbizon is the entrance to the Fontainebleau Forest in Paris, France, with beautiful scenery. In the 1830s and 1840s, a group of painters who were dissatisfied with the rule of the July Dynasty and academic painting came here to settle down and paint, forming a painting school.

It uses real natural landscape painting creation to negate the false historical landscape painting formula of the academic school. It opened the prelude to the huge realist art movement in France in the 19th century. They are tired of urban activities and believe in "returning to nature".
