Standards for hotel room design
Guest rooms have low operating costs and generous revenue returns, making them an important source of hotel profits. Accordingly, it should also become one of the most challenging aspects of hotel design. However, for a long time, the design content of guest rooms, especially standard guest rooms, has been very low. Every detail from the functional layout to the style of furniture has been similar, and they have become "standard" guest rooms in the true sense. This also affects the guests of the rooms, and even In the concept of many hotel owners, a fixed model of guest rooms has been forced to form, and all the inconveniences, inhumanity, and uneconomical caused by this old model have actually become the norm, forcing guests to get used to it and adapt to it. The author and the company's designers are working hard to change this status quo. After more than three years of continuous exploration and practice, our thinking has broadened, and we have also summarized some experiences and rules. Share it here with friends and colleagues in the hotel industry who are also committed to this. About the function "The guest room is the guest's home in a foreign land" - this is not only a sales phrase, but also accurately defines the functional design principle of the guest room. This should be a private, relaxing and comfortable space that condenses many functional requirements such as physical rest, private office, entertainment, business meetings and so on. In the process of innovating, designers are often troubled by so-called "standards" and cannot get rid of the guest room model that has been followed for decades, such as the so-called "Thirteen Pieces" and "Eleven Pieces" of standard guest rooms, which is a game of chess across the country. It's just that you use red beech and he uses cherry wood to express "design". In fact, the standards of standard guest rooms should refer to functional standards, not formal standards. Once you understand this, you can feel free to design. .
●Public corridor and guest room door: Guests use the guest room from the guest room door. This must be kept in mind. The public corridor should focus on the lighting of the guest room door ( purposeful lighting). The door frame and the outside corner of the door side wall are easily damaged parts, and protection needs to be considered in the design. Steel door frames should be a good idea, as they do not deform and are impact-resistant. In addition, the design of the door should focus on decorative expression and match the wood in the room. It is related to the interoperability of design languages ??such as furniture or colors. The width of the door leaf is preferably 880-900mm. If it cannot be achieved, then the scale must be grasped when designing furniture.
●Indoor porch area: The conventional guest room architectural design will form a small corridor 1.0-1.2 meters wide at the entrance, with a built-in wardrobe on the side behind the door. We suggest: If possible, arrange the wardrobe on one side of the sleeping area as much as possible. Guests will find it extremely convenient, and it will also solve the problem of inconvenience caused by too many functions in the narrow space inside the door. Of course, a wardrobe at the entrance can also be built, especially in rooms with small space. Some budget guest rooms with small investment can even omit the wardrobe door. Only one "cavity" is left for use, and luggage can be put directly in, which is convenient and economical. For high-end business rooms, you can also add a grooming and dressing table in this area. The depth of the tabletop is 30cm. Guests can also place some odds and ends, which is a very thoughtful and considerate functional design.
●Working area: Centered on the writing desk. Furniture design becomes the soul of this area. Powerful and complete business functions are reflected here. Broadband, fax, telephone and various sockets should be arranged neatly one by one, and messy wires should also be stored cleanly. The location of the writing desk should also be carefully considered according to the space. Good lighting and sight lines are very important. You don’t have to sit facing the wall like in the past guest rooms. The writing desk in the guest room of Grand Hyatt Hong Kong can be regarded as an example of new design. (Note: The above is a business hotel model, resort hotels can be considered separately)
●Entertainment and leisure area, reception area: In the past, the reception function in the design of business standard guest rooms is gradually weakening. From the perspective of the guest, he hopes that the guest room is a private and completely casual space. There will be various inconveniences in bringing future visitors into the room. From a hotelier's point of view, it is certainly better to receive guests in a guest room than at the hotel's business premises. The latter produces efficiency, so why not? This transformation creates spatial conditions for guest rooms to improve and advance toward more comfortable and pleasant functions. Many functions such as reading, decorative expressions, and music appreciation can be added to the design, changing the situation where people can only lie in bed and watch TV in the room.
●Sleeping area: This is the largest functional area in the entire guest room. Bedside panels and bedside tables have become the core issues of the design. In order to adapt to the needs of different guests and facilitate hotel sales, it is recommended that there be no bedside table or a simple countertop device between the two beds, which can be folded away when needed.
As for the centralized control panel, let’s not mention it anymore. This is the equipment that should be eliminated in the guest room. Bedside tables can be set up on both sides of the bed, because their functions are very simple, and the most important thing is to be easy to use, and they must not be too complicated. The bedside screen and wall are relatively complete areas in the room and can be highlighted. But pay attention to the area about 70cm above the bed level (the position of the guest's head) is easy to get dirty, so you need to consider anti-fouling materials, dimmable seat lamps or table lamps (wall lamps are better), and shape the light environment of the sleeping area. It is very important, the frequency of use and damage rate are high and cannot be ignored.
●Bathroom: The bathroom space is independent, and the wind, water, and electricity systems are intertwined and complex. There are many devices and a small area, so ergonomic principles and humanized design should be followed everywhere. In this regard, it is an international trend to separate wet and dry areas and toilet areas to avoid functional overlap and mutual interference.
1. Basin area: The countertop and makeup mirror are the focus of the bathroom design. Pay attention to the quartz lamp lighting above the basin and the wall lamp lighting on both sides or one side of the mirror. It is best to have both. .
2. Toilet area: First of all, ventilation and good lighting are required. One issue that is often overlooked is the location of the telephone and toilet paper holder, which are often installed on the wall behind the toilet, making them inconvenient to use. In addition, the design of ashtrays and small bookshelves will also show the hotel's thoughtfulness.
3. Bathing area: Whether to retain the bathtub often becomes a "tasteless" issue for owners. Most guests are unwilling to use the bathtub. The bathtub itself also brings increased load, increased investment, and extended house construction time. There are many disadvantages. Unless the level of the hotel and the grade of the guest room require a bathtub, you can completely replace it with an exquisite shower room to save space and reduce investment. In addition, regardless of whether you use a bathtub or a shower area with a shower head, when choosing wall materials, avoid materials that are not easy to clean, such as matte or matte textures, and use them with caution.
4. Other equipment: The bathroom has high humidity and temperature, so good exhaust equipment is very important. You can choose to install the exhaust mask separately from the fuselage (the panel is on the ceiling, the fuselage is on the wall), which can greatly reduce operating noise and extend the service life. The wall where the hair dryer is installed is prone to accidents during use. ***Vibration, also need to pay attention! Regarding the circuit control in the guest room, it generally refers to the control of light circuits and switches. Obviously, the old centralized control panel is very inconvenient to use and should not be used anymore. "Familyization" requires the control of guest rooms. It's back to the home mode - there are corresponding switch panel controls near the corresponding lighting fixtures, which are concise and clear, and conform to the guests' usage habits.
The emergence of some new technologies has also provided new ideas for guest room lighting control modes, such as a fully remote-controlled guest room lighting control system. An infrared remote control the size of a TV remote control can be used to turn the lights on and off at will. Even the switch panel is omitted, and of course some wiring in the wall is omitted.
The rapid development of science and technology drives society forward, and guests are constantly having new requirements for the technological quality of hotel rooms. As a professional hotel designer, you must always pay attention to these cutting-edge new technologies, such as the computer system that interacts with the room, housekeeping center, and front desk. Guests can check their detailed consumption bills in the room at any time, and the hotel can also know whether the guest is in the room or has gone out and other information at any time.
The hotel is the carrier of new urban technology and technology, the window of urban civilization, and the breathing organ in the city. Only when designers realize this, can they feel the heavy sense of mission on their shoulders.
