Please help me to interpret the famous religious painting The Last Judgment.
This mural, like the zenith painting, was completed by Michelangelo alone. The last judgment is a traditional theme of the Bible, and almost all churches have murals on this theme. It's nothing more than what goes around comes around when the propagandist goes to heaven for good and the world for evil after his death. Christianity says that Jesus was resurrected after being crucified and finally ascended to heaven. He began to judge mortal souls on the throne of heaven. At this point, heaven and earth are separated in front of him, and nothing in the world can stop them. The dead, big and small, gathered in front of Jesus, listened to his sermon, announced the "Talking about Life Classics", and determined good and evil. All sinners were punished into the lake of fire, and died for the second time, that is, the death of the soul. All good people are given the water of life by Jesus, so that their souls can live forever. The painter used the title to show many spiritual images representing the sound of human justice: at the top of the picture, that is, under two arches near the zenith, a group of wingless angels were painted around Jesus' instruments of torture, with a cross on the left and a column of shame on the right. Two groups of characters lean towards the center in the cloud. The image of Jesus, which occupies the central position below, is different from the image of Jesus in previous murals. He is a hero in his prime, dignified, not like the savior in the Bible, but like a fair referee. He raised his right arm and announced the trial. On his right, the Virgin Mary was crouching beside Jesus, clutching her headscarf and coat, afraid to face up to the tragedy. "The end of the world" is terrible for this kind woman.
On the left side of Jesus (that is, on the right side of the picture), there is a tall and old apostle Peter who is about to give Jesus the key to the city gate. On the far right, you can also see Andre with a cross, Sebastian with a bunch of arrows, Gardelin with wheels and Laurenti with an iron fence. On the lower left of Jesus is bartholomew, one of the twelve disciples, an old man with a frightened face. He was holding a piece of human skin peeled from him, and the face of this human skin was Michelangelo's own twisted face. Michelangelo added this on purpose. These characters were all holding instruments that were tortured to death during their lifetime, telling their own pain. There are also many historical and mythical figures on the right side of Jesus (that is, on the left side of the picture): Adam is usually thought to be holding a small ladder in his left hand, and the woman wearing a red headscarf behind him is another strong naked old man Eve, that is, the image of St. Paul. Under these apostles, there are sinners who have been thrown into hell, some who have fallen, and some who have gradually risen because of doing good before their death. For example, there are several skeletons on the ground at the bottom left of the picture. Because of their kindness, the bones have grown back. In the lower part of Jesus Center, there are seven angels in a boat. They were sent to hell by divine orders, blowing long horns and summoning all souls to be judged. On the right side of the boat, there is a naked man with his keys hanging upside down. People can point out that this is a symbol of the decline of Pope Nicholas III's power, because he should be punished for donating and selling monks and selling his teaching posts. In the lower right corner of the picture, there is a judge Juno with donkey ears, surrounded by a big snake and a group of demons, suggesting the image of the Pope's etiquette officer, that is, the image of piaggio Cesana who attacked Michelangelo's murals in front of the Pope.
This magnificent composition embodies Michelangelo's humanistic thought. He wants to punish all evil "doomsday" with justice, which means the total collapse of human tragedy. Although some of these images have names and some refer to certain social classes, they still have no patterns that violate religious formulas. With superhuman courage, the artist uses nude images to show it, which proves once again that he dares to affirm the meaning of human beings. Michelangelo's principle is that the way to perform the main task of art is the human body, because they can best reflect the quality of people. 1546, Cesana, the etiquette officer, gossiped in front of the new Pope: "It's inappropriate to draw so many nude pictures showing the whole body in a sacred place; This work is definitely not suitable for churches, but it can be hung in bathhouses or hotels. " So the new pope ordered another painter named Danielle da Voltaire to add some strips of cloth to all the bare lower parts of the mural. Later generations nicknamed the painter "the painter in trousers".
The final trial was "opened" before Christmas in 154 1, and the whole city of Rome was boiling for it. People look at it and regard it as a god, especially Jesus in the center of the mural, which is simply the heroic image of the Italian people. He has the power of God, he can call the wind and rain, and his gestures can turn countless nudes into a whirlwind of the times. The artist's outstanding realism fascinated the Italian people. From this image, the people seem to have heard the real heaven punishment, and he wants to punish those powerful people who let the motherland bear the burden of humiliation and betray the interests of the people. After the mural was finished, even his student vasari, who was far away in Venice, came to watch it. Art historians later commented on Michelangelo like this:
"We have seen that Pope Julius II, Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, Clemens VII, Paul III, Julius III and Pope Pius V all want to attract him to their side. Similarly, Turkish Sultan Su Liman, French King Franz Valua Karl V, Venetian Senate and Duke Cosimo of medici family are all willing to provide him with honorary allowances because they want to share his artistic talent. Only people with such high prestige can be treated well. The world witnessed and admitted that in his position, the three techniques have been improved to the point of perfection, which is unprecedented by ancient masters or modern masters. "
Michelangelo's giant painting The Last Judgment has a total area of about 1370× 1220 cm.
