A Brief Introduction to The Woman in White

This story took place in a small town in England in the 1940s and 1950s.

Walter Hartlet is an ordinary painting teacher, and Pisca, an Italian friend, got a governess position for a wealthy family in Cumberland. On the way back from his mother and sister's house, Mr. Hartlet suddenly met a woman in white and asked him the way to London. Late at night, this strange woman gave Mr. Hartlett the creeps. Strangely, the woman in white knew Cumberland and talked to him about the welfare family at Richmond Manor. After the woman in white got on the bus and left, he saw two men running after the woman in white. I heard that the woman in white was a patient who escaped from a mental hospital. Mr. Hartlet was deeply puzzled.

Linmenling Manor is the temporary residence of Mr. Hartlet as a tutor. Half sisters Marlene Huckabee and Laura Foley's parents have died, and now they live here with Mr. Foley, Laura's uncle and her guardian. One of Hartlet's tasks is to give two young ladies a sketch lesson for four months. When he came to Ritchie Manor in Rimmon, Mr. Hartlett accidentally mentioned the strange woman in white, so he and Miss Huckabee started a secret investigation.

But Mr. Hartlet was attracted by Miss Laura's beauty from the beginning and soon fell in love with her. Miss Laura also suffered greatly from falling in love with Mr. Hartlet. After Miss Huckabee's reminder and suggestion, Mr. Hartlett had to resign as a governess early and stay away from Richmond Hall. He knows his position, his identity, and more importantly, Miss Laura is engaged! Mr. hartle reluctantly left Miss Laura, leaving his family, friends and work abroad with his thoughts on Laura.

After some struggle, Laura finally decided to marry her fiance, Mr. Pisville Greider. However, Laura's married life is not happy. The marriage between Mr. Piswell and Laura is just a conspiracy.

Mr. Piswell's parents died and he was heavily in debt. Because his parents were not registered to get married, he had no inheritance right. In order to get the inheritance, he managed to increase the marriage registration of his parents in the church room, and finally became a baronet with power, property and status. In order to get Miss Laura's inheritance of 20,000 pounds, Mr. Piswell married Laura and tried his best to get the money.

On the one hand, he tried to keep the secret of increasing marriage registration; on the other hand, he conspired with fusco, Laura's uncle. Finally, Anne Caesar Rick, a woman in white, is very similar to Laura in appearance. Laura was sent to a mental hospital and Anne's death was declared as Laura's death. In this way, Pisville got 20,000 pounds, and Count fusco got 1 10,000 pounds because of his wife's identity. However, Laura is not recognized by the society, and people only regard her as Anne who escaped from a mental hospital.

Mr. Hartlet returned to his hometown with deep thoughts on Laura, rekindled his love with Laura and married her. Later, together with Miss Huckabee, Mr. Hartlett went through hardships and took risks to conduct a comprehensive and detailed investigation into the conspiracy of Piswell and others, and finally the truth came out. Mr. Piswell was burned to death in the church, Ors and fusco left conditionally, Laura's identity was confirmed, and finally she and Mr. Hartlet lived happily together.
