1835 Jacob Howe moved from Wisconsin to Missouri and opened a mill in Caldwell County, when Mormonism was still in its infancy. Willard was the first person to enter the blacksmith's shop after the gunfire stopped. He walked past the body of his dead father and found his brother thaddeus who died in the Holocaust. He found only one good thing in the shop: his brother Alma was badly hurt, but he was still alive.

A total of 17 Mormons were massacred and 13 people were injured, including a woman and a little boy. In contrast, only three militiamen were injured and no one died.
