Tutorial on adjusting silver foil material parameters in 3dmax’s vray
First of all, let’s learn about the silver foil material. Generally used in suspended ceilings and commercial hotels.
Silver foil is somewhat similar to our gold foil. Real silver foil is metallic silver that is beaten into thin sheets with a hammer, and then some paving is done, such as some of the current silver foil wallpapers and so on. It's more of some imitation silver material, not real silver.
Let’s take a look at the characteristics of silver foil? Silver foil gives us the whole feeling like a metal, which is somewhat similar to stainless steel, but it is a bit fuzzy than the luster of stainless steel. From this, we know a rough adjustment method.
To simulate in 3dmax, first open the material editor, name it silver foil, and switch to VR material.
First of all, we analyze that the surface of the silver foil has some undulations and textures. We need to add a texture map to it. The definition of our diffuse reflection is the texture and color of the object surface. We add a texture map directly to the diffuse reflection and then display it.
We can analyze whether silver foil is similar to metal. It is simulated metallic silver, so its reflection type should be similar to silver. It is a direct reflection. So when we adjust it, we just need to adjust its reflection directly.
We can render it to see if our adjustment is correct.
Now I feel that the reflection of the silver material is very weak, so we will increase its reflection a little bit here. Let’s render again.
Now my reflexes feel almost the same. What other features does it have? We know there must be some blur, and the blur is quite large. She still has some small bumps, so before we blur it, let's adjust its characteristics first.
We directly drag its diffuse reflection map into the bump channel, so that it has bumpy characteristics.
Let’s render it directly. We can see that the bump is a little too much, so we give it about 5. Rendering in progress.
It’s almost done now. After we adjust these, does this silver look like our real silver foil? Still not quite like it. Because our reflection glossiness has not been adjusted yet. We adjust its reflective glossiness. That is, giving the object a blur treatment. We feel that its highlight is still relatively scattered, so we activate its highlight glossiness separately and adjust it.
Render again.
We can see that the metal surface has some bumps, but the subdivision is relatively low, and the noise particles feel larger. The gloss is a little too blurry. Let's make it a little glossier. The highlights are also improved a bit.
Rendering again, now it feels a little closer.
Let’s increase the parameters. Let’s take a look at what silver foil looks like.
We adjusted the subdivision to about 40, which is relatively blurry and requires more subdivisions. Let's render.
The above is the tutorial for adjusting the silver foil material parameters in 3dmax vray. If you want to know more tutorials on using 3dmax software, you can click this link:
