What stories does the novel "Moscow Gentlemen" tell?

"A Gentleman in Moscow" is a novel published by American writer Emer Toles in 2016. The background of the story is Moscow from the early Soviet Union to the 1950s. Count Alexander Rostov was born in 1889 and was the last generation of Russian nobles. He loves reading and is friendly. He possesses the calmness of a scholar, is humorous, and is good at listening. He is a thorough gentleman. But in 1922, after the civil war, Count Rostov was deemed an unrepentant nobleman and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the Metropolitan Hotel in Moscow. Although at the age of 32 he could no longer step out of the hotel, Count Rostov was unwilling to succumb to the predicament; instead, he chose to face life with a sense of humor and treat everyone with sincerity. In the following thirty years, he became colleagues and close friends with chef Emile and supervisor Andre, fell in love with actor Anna, and witnessed the growth of Nina and Sofia, mother and son, with patience and selfless dedication. Although Count Rostov's world is artificially reduced, it breaks through the high walls of the Metropolitan Hotel and the totalitarian oppression because of friendship, love and family ties.
