Fujian drinking custom

In Fujian, whenever there is a festival or guests come to our house, the host always sells wine to celebrate the welcome. There's an old saying in northern Fujian called "Don't mention the pot without a guest" (Qing Jiaqing's Nanping County Records, Volume 8, Customs). At present, there is still a custom of "drinking without drinking" all over the country, which means that drinking must be enjoyable. Even if there is an old grudge, it can be eliminated by drinking a glass of wine (Record of Xiamen 15, Customs).

There is a tradition of hospitality everywhere, and heroism can also be seen in wine sets. Farmers in the mountainous areas of northern Fujian, eastern Fujian and western Fujian make good use of "sea bowls" (that is, large bowls) to drink, and coastal farmers, the so-called "people who beg for the sea", are also good at drinking. Whenever there are guests, they often entertain them with big bowls of wine. Yongtai called it "R" and bought a big bowl of wine in the pub and drank it on the spot. Similar heavy drinking patterns have also appeared in other regions.

People in Fujian drink rice wine, which is called "eating wine". They often like to warm wine with boiling water or hot water, especially in winter to drive away the cold and increase people's spirit. There is a custom of "persuading wine" on wine tables all over the country. It is also good to guess the fist and order food when drinking. The wine list is similar to other parts of the country, with many numbers, dialects and local tunes, which is more interesting. Mountain people like to fill the wine for their guests. Saying "full" means that the toaster is sincere and the drinker must do his best. There is a saying in southern Fujian that "seven points for tea and eight points for wine", that is, only eight points are poured when drinking, leaving room. For others to drink, you can't "leave blank" but want to be at the bottom. Otherwise it will be considered impolite.

In the old days, there were wine flags in Fujian to attract tourists. In the 1930s, there was a big book named Mao Shoulder outside Fuzhou Hotel. The waiter in the pub "wine!" Shouts are endless. These are rare now.

In some places, people don't forget the hard work of plowing cattle when drinking. During busy farming or festivals, the cows are watered with plows and rice wine to nourish their bodies. Yongtai people usually drink rice wine after work, which means "hard work" When spring ploughing is busy, they send wine to the cows, which also means "hard work" for the cows. In Baihua Village, Zhangzhou, every festival, villagers feed glutinous rice wine to buffalo and hang blooming daffodils on the horns of cows to celebrate. This kind of wine-based scene, where people and cattle celebrate together, can be called a spectacle in Fujian wine customs.
