Nepal Yak Hotel
Biologists believe that humans may have domesticated yak 5000 years ago, and we can see yak in ancient murals. However, the number of domestic yaks of some Tibetan people far exceeds that of wild yaks, and they are raised because they can get milk, meat and fur.
Yaks are different from ordinary cows. They often purr, so they are also called "gruffalo". In addition, yak's lung capacity is three times that of cattle and larger than that of ordinary cattle, which enables them to move in plateau areas. They can withstand the low temperature of MINUS 20 degrees. This depends on the thick fur of yak, but yak is difficult to adapt at low altitude. When the temperature is higher than 30 degrees, they are prone to heatstroke and dehydration.
Yak is a member of Bovidae, and it still retains many original features. Yaks and bison have a strong affinity. About/kloc-0 to 5 million years ago, yak split from bison. As two different independent species, the main difference between the two species lies in their size, but today, only wild yak and domestic yak are left. Wild yaks usually have deep hair and large body, while domestic yaks have many color changes, mostly brown and milky white, because of hybridization. Yak has thick fur under the abdomen, and there are undercoats covering the chest, abdomen and thighs in the thick fur. Yaks have strong legs under thick fur, and wide cloven hooves allow them to walk on mountain roads. They also have hard horns for defense and help them find food under the snow in winter. Both male and female yaks have short necks and humps on their shoulders. Their tails are very long and look a bit like ponytails.
Domestic yaks generally weigh 500 kg for males and 300 kg for females. Wild males can weigh up to 900 kilograms. Shoulder height is about 1 m3, and female shoulder height is about 1 m3.
Wild yaks usually live in groups, mainly to protect female yaks and their young. Most males will live alone as adults until mating season, and they will join a larger group. Yaks are usually timid, they will avoid areas where humans often appear, and only in estrus will yaks become aggressive.
Wild yak is an animal that mainly lives in northern Tibet and western Qinghai Province. Some populations extend to the southern tip of Xinjiang and India. Some yak populations are also distributed throughout Central Asia. However, the main habitat is the plateau above 3 kilometers above sea level, and some cattle will migrate with the seasons to find food. Yak's food, from grass leaves to moss, is their food. Yaks spend a lot of time looking for plants in highland meadows because they can't find much food in winter. If they have cubs, yaks will always take them around for food, and they will also eat snow to keep water in winter. However, even though yaks have excellent viability, the number of yaks in the world is decreasing. /kloc-in the 9th century, there were as many as 1 10,000 wild yaks on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, but now there are only about 1 10,000 wild yaks. Males who live alone are particularly vulnerable to hunting. Usually for high-priced yak skin.
Yaks enter estrus up to four times a year, usually at the end of summer and sometimes even until September, depending on the local environment. The gestation period is usually 270 days, and calves can walk within 10 minutes after birth. Most females give birth every other year, but if there is enough food, they will give birth more frequently.
The life span of yak is about 20 to 25 years, and the life span of wild yak may be shorter because of the natural enemy of wolf.
At present, there are about 5000 yaks in the United States. India and China have officially protected wild yak and established many protected areas for wild yak.
