Unusually well preserved! What's the difference between the mummy of a wolf cub found in Canada 57,000 years ago and today's wolves?
In 20 16, a gold miner discovered the remains of this young female wolf, which is the most complete known wolf mummy and was named Zhur. Even the mastoid process on the wolf's lips was extremely well preserved until the skin and fur were found.
Although the remains of mummy fossils of large mammals have been found in Siberia, they are not common in Alaska and Yukon.
This wolf belongs to a group related to wild wolves in Alaska and Eurasia, but it is not related to wolves living in Yukon today. According to National Geographic, these findings indicate that the first gray wolves in Yukon became extinct and were later replaced by other populations. As early as four years ago, a miner accidentally discovered the remains of a wolf cub in a foreign country and kept it well. Scientists later judged that this Kang cub only survived for about 6-7 weeks, but it was a relic of 57,000 years ago! Thanks to tens of thousands of years of frozen soil cover.
At present, there are two kinds of wolves in North America: the gray wolf and the red wolf. In addition, there are five most famous subspecies of gray wolves in North America: Arctic Wolf, Mexican Wolf, Eastern Canada Wolf, Great Plains Wolf and Michigan Valley Wolf. Arctic wolves live in the Arctic Islands and Greenland in Canada, Mexican wolves in northern Mexico to the southwestern United States, eastern Canadian wolves in southeastern Canada and northeastern United States, Great Plains wolves inhabit all parts of the western United States, while southeastern Alaska and northwestern Canada and Michigan Valley wolves are widely distributed in Alaska and western Canada.
There are three subspecies of modern red wolf: Canis rufus floridanus, which lives in Florida to Alabama, and is now extinct (actually, it is Black Wolf, Florida, a subspecies of red wolf with dark fur). Red dogs in the whole Mississippi River valley to East Texas, and red dogs in the eastern United States and central Texas. Red Wolf 1980 has been declared functionally extinct in the wild, and only a few wild individuals remain in the wild at present.
Wolves once lived in the widest range of mammals, including Arctic tundra, plains, grasslands, deserts, mountains and forests. Wolves are found all over Europe, Asia, Japan and North America (except southwest California).
