I am from Panzhihua and have traveled several roads, so I will take my time:

Chengdu - Panzhihua (G5 Beijing-Kunming): 600 kilometers (the road sign is 580 kilometers, plus It’s almost 600 (almost 600 kilometers to get out of the city). It usually takes me 8 hours to drive (including eating and resting on the way). The speed limit on many sections between Tuowushan and Ya’an is 70 or 80 kilometers. The section is often foggy, so drive carefully!

Panzhihua-Kunming: As you said, two roads. The first is Panzhihua - Wuding - Kunming, about 300 kilometers: there are more than 90 kilometers of expressway from Wuding to Kunming that has not been repaired, and the road is in bad shape! When I drive from Panzhihua to Kunming via Wuding, it usually takes 4.5 hours (faster), slightly slower, 5 hours, and even slower, 6 hours! The second is Panzhihua - Chuxiong - Kunming, about 400 kilometers. I just ran it on March 2, 5 and a half hours (Buick commercial vehicle, Panzhihua urban area - Chuxiong - Kunming Qingnian Road Pankun Hotel, 16:40 —22:10), if it’s full daytime, you can get there in 4.5-5 hours.

In short, the entire journey from Chengdu to Kunming is an expressway, except for the more than 90 kilometers of bad roads from Wuding to Kunming. It is recommended that you stay one night in Panzhihua on the way and go to Kunming the next day. Also, if you have an off-road vehicle, you can go to Wuding or Chuxiong. If you have a car, it will be more painful to go to Wuding. It is recommended to go to Chuxiong!
