Humen Yuge Hotel

As the first person in China who opened his eyes to the world in modern times, Lin Zexu's deeds are widely known, and many people are puzzled: Why did Lin Zexu make great contributions, but he was dismissed and sent instead of being rewarded? To make this clear, we have to add a key figure, that is, Qishan, who later replaced Lin Zexu.

Qishan is a native of Zhenghuang Banner in Manchuria. He is a hereditary first-class marquis. He is a typical aristocrat. In a.d. 1806, Yuan Wailang, the minister of punishments, was awarded, and later he was promoted to the governor of Henan. Successive zhili governor, wenyuange university. Ironically, this guy wore so many official hats, but it was not these that finally made him famous, but a very important event in modern history.

In A.D. 1839, opium was rampant in China, which not only seriously damaged the health of Chinese people, but also caused a large amount of silver outflow. Daoguang is a master of mending robes. How can he tolerate foreigners doing such a thing under their noses?

In addition, Lin Zexu, Governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, said: "If we still ignore it, there will not be many soldiers who can defend the enemy and there is no money to pay." Immediately, we felt that the situation was serious and made Lin Zexu the governor of Guangdong and went to Guangdong to ban opium.

Originally, things went well. Lin Zexu found the representative of British business to change the law and forced him to hand over more than 2,000 boxes of opium in public and destroy them at Humentan. Daoguang was overjoyed when he heard the news, and repeatedly praised Lin Zexu for "great joy!" , and personally wrote two plaques for Lin Zexu's birthday.

Before long, the situation took a turn for the worse. 1June, 840, British troops blocked the Pearl River Estuary and attacked Guangzhou. Lin Zexu fought to the death, and the British army had no chance to take advantage. Going north along the coast, landing at Dagukou, Tianjin, suddenly threatening Beijing. Daoguang was completely panicked and immediately reassigned Qishan as an imperial envoy to settle the dispute with full authority.

Qi Shan first fought a battle with the British. As a result, when he saw that the British ship was powerful, he was frightened at once, and naturally he didn't win the battle. In order to get rid of his guilt, he blamed everything on Lin Zexu, and even made a rumor that he lied to the British that opium was collected and sold, but it was destroyed, which angered the British people and led to this war. Daoguang believed it and didn't have time to examine it carefully. He immediately dismissed Lin Zexu, accepted the investigation, and soon sent him to Yili to "atone". Lin Zexu was helpless and had to bear a lot of grievances and embarked on a journey.

The next step is Qishan, which can't be beaten. In order to make it complete, he cleverly talked privately with the British about a "draft convention with a nose": ceding Hong Kong and paying 6 million yuan in compensation. I thought it was enough to go back and discuss this matter with the emperor. I didn't expect Daoguang to buy it at all. The British side also thinks that 6 million yuan is too small, but it disagrees, and the two sides have not reached an agreement. Finally, during the Battle of Tanggukou, Dagubao fell, Guan Tianpei died in the line of duty for his country, the first Opium War defeated the Qing Dynasty, and the signing of treaty of nanking was even more vicious than the Draft Convention on Nose Penetration.

Of course, Qishan didn't get any benefits in this matter. Daoguang accused him of being not only incompetent, but also more malicious-traitorous! Put him in the end and send him to exile. With his bad reputation, the end will be much worse than that of Lin Zexu.
