Shanghai is located on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, the east coast of the Asian continent, the front of the Yangtze River Delta, the middle section of the north-south arc coastline of China and the alluvial plain of the Yangtze River Delta, with an average elevation of 4 meters. In the north of Shanghai, where the Yangtze River meets the sea, there are three islands: Chongming Island, Changxing Island and hengsha island. Chongming Island, the third largest island in China, is formed by alluvial sediment carried by the Yangtze River.
