Comfortable Club Villa ~ ~ Meet Bawa in Lanka (1)
The second time was 2065438+early May 2007. By chance, I went to Sri Lanka with Cunmo Design Company (hereinafter referred to as Sri Lanka) and stayed for ten days in a hotel and manor designed by green architect Jeoffrey Bawa, who is known as Sri Lanka's national treasure.
This article only writes about the experience of a small hotel. The name of the exquisite small hotel is Bentota Club Villa Hotel.
The deterioration of the earth's ecology promotes the concept of green and sustainable development to enter the field of architectural design. But before these ideas were formed, Jeffrey Bawa had already adapted to the local architectural tradition, building materials and construction methods in his architectural design practice, and adapted his own design to local conditions and integrated it into the local environment. His tropical naturalistic design style has created an inter-generational architectural system and brought immortal soul to regional architecture.
The scale of a hotel doesn't have to be high, big and elegant. Its unique environment, unique temperament and excellent service can make travelers feel great enjoyment during the journey.
Club Villa is the second night (May 1) after we arrived in Lanka. It is located in the suburb of Bentota, south of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, where the Bentota River flows lazily and flows westward into the Indian Ocean.
Out of the transit highway, we got on the toot-toot bus (three-wheeled minibus), which tooted and bumped away all the way. On both sides of Hongni Road, there are patches of forests, winding paths, shady trees and breezy winds, which are very pleasant. Soon, the car stopped at a clean Little Square on the red clay road and arrived at the clubhouse villa.
Standing there, looking up and down, looking around, a row of khaki brick walls surrounded a mansion, with red clay roads and large forests outside the courtyard wall, blue sky and white clouds overhead and fresh air. What a small hotel hidden in the country. It has only 16 rooms, but it does not lack the facilities that a tourist hotel should have. In fact, it is a small and elegant boutique hotel, which consists of two villas: Jeffrey Bawa's old house and the house he designed for his friends.
Just opened the door to welcome guests, it is a small front yard. The bougainvillea outside the wall blocked the dust on the dirt road. The ground in the front yard is paved with red sandstone, so the rain can quickly penetrate into the depths of the land, and there will be no water accumulation, and sand will not be brought into the river by rain. Intelligent environment design is also a traditional local architectural design.
On the right side of the small front yard is a small garden with a fish pond. The two spaces are separated by a wall. The wall is green, simple and clean, with a door opening of a gray door frame and a window opening of a gray wooden grille.
Small and exquisite front yard and side yard
The wide limestone path led the guests into the reception hall, which was also small, and the polite waiter took us to the living room. Spacious and transparent, there is no outer wall on the side facing the yard, and it is almost green everywhere. Handicrafts are placed on the long table, and large sketched plant paintings and homespun batiks are hung on the big white wall. Comfortable seats and soft lighting are just like the living room at home.
There is a big yard to the west of the living room, and the connection between them adopts a square porch to ensure that the thermal radiation of the sun will not reach the lounge.

The big lawn in the yard is green and clean, and several plain flower trees (egg flower trees) have grown into a small forest. They have been standing there for decades. Hundreds of years? The canopy is broad, intertwined, flowery and fragrant, which effectively blocks the blazing sun. Next to the lawn is the West Coast Narrow Gauge Railway, which was built during the colonial period. Not far west of the railway is the Indian Ocean. The three are unobstructed, and residents can swim in the sea by crossing the railway. From time to time, a long whistle sounded, which floated from the seaside with the rumble of the train, as if to remind you to be careful when crossing the railway. Next to the jasmine tree is a standard swimming pool, which is the standard of Sri Lankan hotels.

Next to the big lawn of the yard is the West Coast Narrow Gauge Railway, and to the west of the railway is the Indian Ocean.
Standing on the big lawn, looking back, the red clay roadside is a row of small buildings with one floor public and two floors guest rooms. The ground floor of the building is the dining room. Another two-story building is placed at right angles to it, independent and unconnected.
The house is hidden behind a big tree and blends in with the environment. Two-story brick-wood structure building, using the most authentic local materials-bricks, tiles, wooden frames, wooden doors and windows ... wide roof to keep out rain and shade. Take the guests to their rooms, which have narrow patios, corridors and dripping wooden stairs. The patio between guest rooms can transmit light, ventilate and collect rainwater, and small trees are planted. Pushing open the guest room door, I saw green, but I couldn't see the stranger.
The design, layout and function of Jeffrey Bawa's early independent villas are similar to those of European country estates, but the design of space and environment is a tradition in Sri Lanka: the house pays attention to natural ventilation, so patios and corridors are set up everywhere. These small spaces can not only ventilate the sun, improve the microclimate, but also bring blue sky and white clouds indoors.
The layout of the house is to adapt to the local climate and environment and let the residents get the greatest comfort.
Green, quiet and comfortable are the first choice for villa design.
The reception hall, living room, tea room, reading room, dining room and other public spaces are small and exquisite, independent and connected, and all open. The space is flowing, and the air floats into the room from the outside, which also brings the fragrance of trees and flowers.
All patios, gardens and other open places are planted with plants, and the management is vigorous and clean. Sitting in those comfortable chairs, you can see a natural landscape painting in a frame surrounded by beams and columns.

The guest room on the first floor has a small yard and a lounge with two slopes, close to the big lawn and swimming pool, but it is quiet and not easy to be peeked.
Rooms on the second floor use sloping roofs as attics, and families can live in them and rent only one single room.
Just entering my guest room on the second floor, I feel that the furniture there is full of Dutch colonial style and a little nostalgic. And I have long been moved by the quiet, comfortable and convenient here. Sitting in a chair in a small space surrounded by bay windows, looking out, there are large lawns and jasmine trees in front of you. Xu Lai breezes and the sun sets. Listen to the waves in the Indian Ocean in the distance, and listen to the birds singing.
It is very comfortable to stay quietly in the room to make coffee, tea, read books and surf the Internet. This is also a way of traveling.
