Classification of English Corner

The period from 1978 to 1992 was the birth and peak period of the English Corner. Major cities in China grew and developed like mushrooms after a rain.

Most large and medium-sized cities across the country have a large number of English corners, which mainly fall into three categories.

The first is the English corner organized by social freedoms, such as the People’s Park English Corner in Shanghai. Founded in 1978, it has a long history; there is also the very popular F.E.C English Club in Shanghai, which started at the Xujiahui Campus of Jiaotong University in 2011. Because of its unique model, it has also jointly launched its club customization with Carnegie Mellon University social networking applications.

The second is the English corners on university campuses, such as the Renmin University English Corner, Tsinghua English Corner, East China Normal University English Corner, etc.

The third is the English corner organized by social institutions, such as Shanghai Pudong Library and so on.
