Zhenan County has a long history.

The Xia Dynasty belonged to the Feng (Feng) region; the Yin, Shang and Western Zhou Dynasty belonged to the Shu region.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, it belonged to the Feng region of Chu, and during the Warring States period, it belonged to the Chu Yang region.

In 221 BC, Qin Shihuang unified China and divided the country into thirty-six counties. Zhen'an fell under the jurisdiction of Hanzhong County.

During the Western Han Dynasty, Zhenan was under the jurisdiction of Xicheng County, Hanzhong County.

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (188-220 AD), Zhen'an returned to Hanzhong County in Yizhou.

During the Three Kingdoms period, it was under the jurisdiction of Xiyang.

In the second year of Taishi (266) of the Western Jin Dynasty, Fengyang County was divided into the southern part of Jingzhao and the northern part of Pingyang, which belonged to Shangluo County and governed present-day Shanyang, Zhenan, and Zhashui.

In the first year of Jianwu of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317), Fengyang was withdrawn, and Zhen'an fell under the jurisdiction of Shangluo County.

In the second year of Tai'an (456) in the Northern Wei Dynasty, Fengyang County was reestablished and belonged to Shangyong County.

In the first year of Tongtian (696), Wu Zetian divided Fengyang West (i.e. south of Jiepai Bay in today's Zhashui County, the northeastern part of Ningshan County and the jurisdiction of Zhen'an County) and settled Anye County, which belonged to Shangzhou .

From this time on, Zhenan began to establish counties.

In the second year of Tang Jinglong (708), Anye County belonged to Jingzhao Prefecture.

In the first year of Jingyun (710), it was transferred to Shangzhou.

In the first year of Qianyuan (758), it was renamed Qianyuan County and belonged to Jingzhao Prefecture, and then to Shangzhou.

In the second year of Qianyu of the Later Han Dynasty (949), it was renamed Qianyou County and belonged to Jingzhao Prefecture.

In the ninth year of Kaibao in the Northern Song Dynasty (976), Qianyou County belonged to Yongxing Military Road.

In the twelfth year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (1142), Yongxing Military Road was changed to Jingzhaofu Road, and the county belonged to Jingzhaofu Road.

The Jin Dynasty abolished the county, demoted it to Qianyou Town, and entered Xianning County under the jurisdiction of Xi'an Prefecture.

In the Yuan Dynasty, Xianning belonged to the Shaanxi Province; in the 29th year of the Yuan Dynasty (1292), Qianyou County was reestablished under the jurisdiction of Jinzhou.

In the eighth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1375), it was restored to the Qianyou Inspection Department and was under the jurisdiction of Xianning County.

In the third year of Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty (autumn of 1452), due to the scattered residences in Xianning and Chang'an counties, a county was established in the north of the Qianyou Inspection Department, named Zhen'an, and belonged to Xi'an Prefecture.

In the 13th year of Chenghua (1477), it was changed to Shangzhou.

In the third year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1725), Zhenan was under the jurisdiction of Shangzhou, which was directly under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province.

In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), the organizational structure of Xi'an Prefecture was abolished, and Zhen'an was under the jurisdiction of Hanzhong Road.

After the Taoist establishment was abolished in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), Zhenan was directly under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province.

In the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), Zhenan County was under the jurisdiction of the Fourth Administrative Inspectorate of Shaanxi Province of the Republic of China until 1949.

In November 1949, the entire Zhenan County was liberated.
