Summary of Yang Zhi's Story in Water Margin

Yang Zhi is the grandson of Yang, the gatekeeper of the Five Dynasties and Three Generations. He is called a green-faced beast because of a large bruise on his face. He has lived in Kansai since childhood. He was a military attache in his early years and became an official in the temple. After escorting Hua Shigang, he capsized in the Yellow River and dared not go back to Beijing to die, so he had to take refuge in Jianghu.

After leaving the Snow Mountain Temple, Lin defected to Liangshan, where he was made difficult by Wang Lun, the owner of the stockade, and had to go down the mountain to find warlords. Yang Zhi was on the verge of forgiveness and wanted to go to Tokyo for reinstatement. He happened to pass by the water margin and met Lin Chong. The two men fought more than fifty times, regardless of the outcome, and were finally persuaded by Wang Lun. Wang Lun intended to recruit Yang Zhi, but Yang Zhi declined and had to let him go.

After Yang Zhi arrived in Tokyo, he got to know Qiu through contacts, but Gao Qiu kicked him out. He was penniless, only to sell his ancestral treasure knife in Tianhanqiao market, but he met a ruffian cow. Niu Er should seize the nod and pester again and again. Yang Zhi killed Niu Er on a whim. Then he surrendered to Kaifeng government and was sentenced to death. People in Tianhanqiao sympathize with Yang Zhi and spend money for him. In the end, Yang Zhi was spared the death penalty, and only stabbed the left-behind department of Beijing Daming Mansion with the charge of "fighting and killing people and injuring people by accident" to banish the army.

When Yang Zhi arrived at Daming Mansion, he was appreciated by Liang Zhongshu, who stayed in Beijing, and was left in the mansion to listen to politics. Seeing that he worked hard, Liang Zhongshu wanted to promote him to the rank of deputy in the army, but he was worried that someone would refuse to accept him, so he arranged for Dongguomen to teach martial arts. Yang Zhi defeated Zhou Jin, the deputy army, with a gun and an arrow. Liang Zhongshu asked Yang Zhi to replace Zhou Jin as the deputy army, but this annoyed the real army Suochao. Suo Chao fought against Yang Zhi for more than fifty times, regardless of victory or defeat.

Worried about losing both sides, Wenda ordered Gong He and Li Cheng to be reused together. Liang Zhongshu promoted Suochao and Yang Zhi to Guan Jun for governance at the same time.
