The school’s predecessor was Fudan Public School founded in 1905. It was one of the earliest privately-founded colleges and universities in China. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University to form the new Fudan University. In 2017, the school was selected into the Category A list of "Double First-Class" construction universities.
