Elephant Orphanage

Tickets: 2,500 rupees for adults, 1,000 rupees for children

Opening hours: 8:30-18:00

Elephant bathing time: 10:00-12:00/14:00-16:00.

Currently, there are only two elephant orphanages in the world, one in Sri Lanka and one in Kenya. In 1975, the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department established the world's first "Elephant Orphanage" for young elephants that were homeless, seriously injured in traps, particularly seriously injured or sick. Since its inception, the range of selected orphanages has continued to expand.

Here, like Thailand, elephants are regarded as national treasures, and the elephants living here are carefully cared for by specialized people.

When they arrived at the elephant orphanage, it was time for the elephants to take a bath. The elephant came out of the yard and bathed in the river across the road.

Because it has just rained, the elephants have become "coolies" and the staff are giving them a bath. The elephants played happily in the water, starting a happy afternoon.

Lion Rock

Tickets: rupees for adults and £4,620 for Serbs. Children aged 6-12 years old 2,310 (including large tickets, murals, museums)

Opening hours: 8:30-17:30

From Elephant Orphanage to Sigiriya The journey to the ancient city takes about 2 hours, and the road conditions are still 18 bends on the mountain road, but this does not seem to affect our driver Rumesh's acceleration. He kept overtaking and experienced the skillful driving skills of Sri Lankan drivers.

The Lion Rock is known as the landmark of Sri Lanka, one of the must-see attractions, and is known as "one of the eight wonders of the world". It took 18 years to build a palace in the sky on a giant orange rock.

Lion Rock refers to a giant rock 200 meters high. Two moats and three walls surround the square city. The moat in the park is still well preserved. There are two major highlights here: first, admiring the ancient murals on the spiral staircase; second, watching the afterglow of the setting sun fill the earth on the top of the mountain.

Originally, this huge rock was built like a huge lion. Now, all that remains is a lone lion carcass. The lion's head has weathered and fallen off, and an empty garden palace is hidden on the lion's back. It is a world-class precious heritage protected by UNESCO.

The royal garden became a backyard for monkeys, with a family of three caught playing in the trees. It's a pity that the baby ran away and was not caught.

A special reminder is that if you need a tour guide to explain, the price must be negotiated in advance, and assistance along the mountaineering route will also be charged. If it is not necessary, refuse it firmly.

Temple of the Tooth Relic

Opening hours: 5:30-20:00 in the temple; worship times are 5:30-6:45, 9:30-11:00, 18:30-20:00; 7:30 -18:00, Buddhist Temple Museum; World Buddhist Museum 8:00-19:00

Royal Botanic Gardens

Tickets: 1,500 rupees for adults, 550 rupees for children, 825 rupees for students.

Opening hours: 8:00-17:00

Today, I spent most of the time on the bus. We originally planned to go to Kandy to visit the Temple of the Tooth and the Royal Botanic Gardens today, but due to the riots in Kandy, Sri Lanka, the country entered a state of emergency when we went there.

Kandy is where the incident took place, so there is now a curfew. For safety reasons, we have canceled all trips here. However, Rumesh said that if you want to go to Nuwara Eliya, you have to pass through Kandy, otherwise you have to take a long detour, and his home is near Kandy, so there is no problem here. In the end we decided to pass through Kandy without going to the sights or spending the night here.

After entering Kandy, soldiers with guns will stand guard every few hundred meters. Although I was a little nervous when I saw this battle going by like this, I saw that the local people lived a relatively harmonious life. As usual, I slowly relaxed.

It was noon when I arrived in Kandy, and I suddenly saw KFC and I was so hungry. After dinner, Lumeis talked to us. He has a happy family, with a son and a daughter, and has always dreamed of owning a car of his own. Later we learned that local taxes in Sri Lanka are very high, and the tens of thousands of cars in the country have to be doubled here. However, wages in Sri Lanka are not high.

Rumesh is a very professional driver. He not only has good driving skills, but also told us a lot of playing skills and precautions. Every day when he saw that we were not sleepy, he would talk to us a lot and introduce various things about this country. Your English is fluent and communication is basically no problem.

After eating, Lumes proposed to take us to Kandy Lake. Some people say that Kandy Lake is to Kandy what West Lake is to Hangzhou, which shows the significance of Kandy Lake to the entire Kandy. The scenery in the lake is beautiful, and the lake is covered with tropical flowers and trees, forming natural trees.

Horton Plains

Ticket: about 3,400 rupees.

Opening hours: 6:30-18:30

It takes about an hour’s drive from Nuwara Eliya to Horton Plains. In order not to be shrouded in heavy fog, people usually get up at 4 o'clock in the morning to go to this famous scenic spot at the end of the world. Since it rained the day before and we didn’t want to get up early the next day, we decided to leave at 9 o’clock for a hike on Horton Plains. Although Sri Lanka has summer all year round, it is located in a mountainous area and has large temperature differences between morning and evening. It is highly recommended to wear thick clothes when going out. We can't bring too many thin down jackets, and it's really cold here!

Horton Plains is circular in shape, and there are two ways to hike: clockwise and counterclockwise. The total length is about 13 kilometers and the journey takes 4-5 hours. This is probably the longest road I have ever walked. Special note: In order to protect the environment, the scenic spot does not provide food and water. Food needs to be prepared in advance, otherwise it will be difficult to support.

Horton Plains is an important eco-tourism area in Sri Lanka, a world natural heritage, and the only national park that allows tourists to walk. Most of it is covered by primitive grassland, interspersed with many dense jungles, and the landscape and species are rich.

During the hike, the entire plain was shrouded in fog and drizzle, but I still firmly believed that there would be sunshine ahead. After walking for half an hour, we arrived at the end of the small world. The sky was still gray and we couldn't see the distant mountain roots clearly (no wonder everyone chose to set off in the early morning).

Yala National Park

Tickets: $15 for adults; $8 for children; $250 for Jeeptrackers, service fee is $8/vehicle, VAT is 12%

Opening hours: 06:00-18:30. The park is closed every year during the dry season. The exact date varies every year. The official website will announce it about two months in advance.

With obsession, go to appreciate the scenery of Little Africa. It is very thrilling to wander the whole open-top jeep in the park and even in the area where Ceylon leopards roam. At five o'clock in the morning, when it was dark, the jeep picked us up at the door of the hotel. When we arrived at the entrance of Yala Park, the sky gradually darkened and then turned slightly brighter.

Especially you have to take a jeep to enter the national park. We made a reservation with the driver one day in advance (all hotels and B&Bs here manage reservations). The ticket for two people is 600 yuan. If it is more cost-effective for one person to take one more car, it can be visually estimated that up to six people can be seated.

The most anticipated thing here is seeing the Ceylon Leopard. On the way, I kept praying for good luck today, but in the end it didn't show up.

The national park is very large. It is a paradise for crocodiles, elephants, deer, bears, wild buffalo, peacocks, wild boars and a variety of birds. It is also recognized as the forest park with the highest density of leopards in the world.

In order to look for various wild animals, the dusty and potholed roads we ran along were like riding a roller coaster. It is recommended to wear masks. Although I didn’t see the Ceylon leopard, I saw my baby elephant, which made up for my regret at the elephant orphanage.
