Xiamen Airlines Co., Ltd. (referred to as Xiamen Airlines, Xiamen Airlines) was established in July 1984. It is a joint venture between the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Fujian Province and the first airline in China to operate according to the modern enterprise system.

The current shareholders are China Southern Airlines Co., Ltd. (accounting for 51 shares), Xiamen C&D Group Co., Ltd. (accounting for 34 shares) and Hebei Aviation Investment Group Co., Ltd. (accounting for 15 shares).

Xiamen Airlines is an independently operated legal entity, a formal member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and a member of SkyTeam, one of the world's three major airline alliances.
